Subject: Article one- The Third Format: by Dark Marik 07

Okay hello, I decided to start submitting a bunch of tips to you all here on pojo.com to read. These tips will be in a series, which will involve a new format of the game of Yu-Gi-Oh! I will call these articles the Third Format Articles by DarkMarik07.

Some Friends and I have been getting sick and tired of the current format in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading card game, for some time now. So one of my friends came up with the idea that we play our own way, in a new format where original decks have more power to stand up to the cookie cutter decks.

How does this work? Well not only did we excessively add cards to the banned/restricted list, but also we decided to ban every card the Booster pack Legend of Blue-Eyes White Dragon Through Invasion of Chaos. We didn’t stop there ether. We also decided to ban the Tournament Packs and The Hobby League Promo Cards. The Reprint Sets of Dark Beginnings and Dark Revelations also were banned, except for cards originally from video games, or Ancient Sanctuary. Starter and Structure Decks cards were also limited. All cards in decks that were found in booster sets that were banned were decided not allowed to be used in decks.

In the end the following Sets/Types of Promos were found legal to be used in the new format we created:

The Creator

Some of the restrictions and banned cards may seem weird to you, but trust me, they are there for a reason.

  1. Exchange of The Spirit Was removed from the banned list due to most of it’s support taken away from it in the booster set banning.
  2. Wall of Revealing Light is an extremely powerful card in this format. Why? Because of the lack of spell and trap removal, Heavy Storm, Harpie’s Feather Duster, Breaker The Magical Warrior, Mystical Space Typhoon are all banned. The only real good spell/Trap removal is Mobius The Frost Monarch and he is limited to one.
  3. The Drawing power of Dekotchi The Battlechannted Locomotive, Skelengel, and Dark Mimic Lv 1 X3 each made it too easy to draw the cards you needed, so by limiting them all to a total of one per deck it makes it harder to draw.
  4. The power of the Four Monarchs was shown in the October 2005 format and now with out the power of many other cookie cutter cards, the Monarch would be abused and override the game, so we limited them one each per deck.
  5. Brain Control also supports “mad-Monarch Control” and is also a main field control card, so it too is now limited.
  6. With Widespread Ruin being the only trap card that destroys monsters when they attack, Horus Lv 8 becomes very deadly. Making him virtually unbeatable with Lord of Dragons.
  7. Horus LV 6 and Mystic Swordsmen LV5 are almost immortal cards when almost nothing can destroy them.
  8. Doom Dozer is semi-limited due to it’s easy summoning cost, like the Envoys it can be summoned and easily abused.

That is all for this week’s intro to the “Third Format of Yu-Gi-Oh!” I will be back next week with a look at a few deck types and how they work in the new format. Also I will run you by some card techs which work very well in the new format. IF you have any questions, email me at kclostsouls07@aol.com
