No philosophical stuff like newbies or originality today. Today I discuss my views on a card with mixed responses across the yugioh community, Deck Devastation Virus, FET-EN058, a normal trap which reads, “Tribute one DARK monster with an ATK of 2000 points or more on your side of the field. Check all monsters on your opponent’s side of the field, your opponent’s hand, and all cards he/she draws during the next three turns, and destroy all monsters with an ATK of 1500 or less.” I had three separate responses in the first ten seconds of reading about this card. First I was ecstatic. Since Upper Deck traditionally screws up translations, I thought at first this was the Deck Destruction Virus of Death, my hero Kaiba’s famous Crush Card. Then I was supremely disappointed when I read it and realized that it pretty much switched the stats of the monster to be sacrificed with the monsters it kills. Finally, I began to feel curious as I realize this card can be powerful. First off, this card is inferior to Deck Destruction Virus of Death. While DDVD is meant to completely cripple an opponent, DDV only weakens them. The first issue could go either way. That issue is the monster that needs to be sacrificed. DDV suffers incredibly as a result. The two monsters that I think of for combos with DDVD were sangan and spirit reaper. If you tributed sangan for it, you could grab any monster*cough yata-garasu cough* and pulverize them unopposed. Now, in Advanced, without yata, it’s not quite as powerful, but you can still have relatively free reign of their LPs, provided you can dodge their S/Ts. Spirit Reaper provides a powerful wall, and when your opponent finally breaches it by attaching an Axe or something to it you chain DDVD to it and take their field down with your spirit reaper. DDV doesn’t really have a lot of potential for tribute combos. The one I like to use is Chaos Sorcerer. Summon it, remove a mon, then tribute it for DDV to clear out a bunch more. This card would also work well in a Dark Magician Deck, and of course let’s not forget the Zombies, the King of the Graveyard Deck. However, you’re still being required to toss a tribute monster from the field to activate this thing, and that’s going to be tough. The second area is where DDV is hopelessly outmatched by DDVD. DDVD kills all opponent’s mons with 1500 ATK or more. DDV kills opponent’s mons with 1500 ATK or less. Typically, the greatest threats are going to come from the higher power monsters. There are exceptions to this rule, especially against burn/stall decks and whenever you have to clear out a spirit reaper, but overall, it would be much better to be clearing out the high-level monsters instead of the lower power ones. DDV is not nearly as effective as DDVD. However, DDV is not a pathetic trash- heap-worthy card either. I keep one in my sidedeck at all times. First, people are often so busy worrying about the monster destruction effect they overlook the other one. You get to see every monster on your opponent’s field AND their entire hand for the next three turns! This ability by itself nearly makes this card worthy of the sacrifice of a DARK trib mon from the field by itself, and does make the cut in zombie decks where you can just book of life your zombie back. The monster destruction effect is basically just icing on the cake. While it doesn’t usually have the game- altering effects of DDVD, it can prove aggravating to nearly all decks, and is lethal to the aforementioned Burn. DDV is definitely a card worthy of keeping tucked away in your sidedeck. IT has power, and can be the game-shifting card in certain situations. Keep it close by. O yeah even if we had DDVD it would banned so that’s kind of a moot argument. Comments? Question? My email is seanslcars@comcast.net and my AIM is NazGul0010. I’m not one of those people that says, “No hatemail please!”. I love reading that stuff. Until next time-SetoKaibafan13
