Dark Magician

>From time to time I am going to start posting articles on certain
Archetype's. I will include a brief description about the decks strategy and
playability. I will even name cards that aide the archtype, and I will
include a deck sample as well.

For my first Archetype Review, I will review my favorite deck type, as well
as the one I currently run. None other than the Dark Magician Deck. Another
version of this deck revolves around Dark Paladin.

Dark Magician
Dark/Spellcaster/ Level: 7 - Ultra Rare
2500/ 2100

MFC-065 Skilled Dark Magician
Dark/Spellcaster/Effect Lvl. 4 - Super Rare
1900/1700
Each time you or your opponent activates 1 Spell Card, put 1 Spell Counter
on this card (max 3). You can Special Summon 1 "Dark Magician" from your
hand, Deck, or Graveyard in face-up Attack or Defense Position by offering
this monster with 3 Spell Counters as a Tribute during your Main Phase

MFC-100 Miracle Restoring
Trap Card - Common
Remove 2 Spell Counters on your side of the field. Special Summon 1 "Dark
Magician" or "Buster Blader" from your Graveyard in face-up Attack or
Defense Position

MFC-095 Pitch-Black Power Stone
Continous Trap Card - Common
After activation, put 3 Spell Counters on this card. During each of your
turns you can move 1 of this card's Spell Counters to another face-up card
on the field that you can put a Spell Counter on. When there are no Spell
Counters on this card this card is destroyed.

MFC-107 Diffusion Wave-Motion
Spell Card - Secret Rare
Pay 1000 Life Points. Select 1 level 7 or higher Spellcaster-Type monster on
your side of the field. During this turn, only the selected monster can
attack and it attacks all monsters on your opponent's side of the field. The
effects of Effect Monsters destroyed by the selected monster in battle
cannot be activated

Dark Magician, it is weak for a level 7 monster, but what if you don't have
to even draw it to summon him? Skilled Dark Magician makes this all
possible. No matter where Dark Magician is, by removing 3 Spell counters and
tributing Skilled Dark Magician, you can get Dark Magician on the field
fast, effectively, and Special Summoned! Pitch-Black Power Stone is another
card to help special summon Dark Magician. You can add 1 counter to Skilled
Dark Magician and Magical Restoring to speed up the process of summoning
Dark Magician. Once Dark Magician is out, you can use him as a beatstick, or
use supporting cards for him. Diffusion Wave-Motion will have Dark Magician
destroy the field for 1000 LP. Since most monsters won't have 2500 ATK or
DEF, Dark Magician will kill pretty much anything, and you won't have to
worry about effects of monsters.

The strategy for Dark Magician decks is simple. Get out Dark Magician as
fast as possible, then beat the crap out of your opponent with it. Another
version uses Dark Paladin with DM, for Magic Negation.

Right now Dark Magician decks can do very well in tournaments, mine has won,
and never came in less then the finals. From experience I can say that Dark
Magician dominates beatdowns, because once DM hits the field, they can't
attack you, destroying thier strategy. When beatdowns can't attack, they
lose. Against Exodia, a side-deck will make sure that Exodia will end up
obliterated. Against Hand Disruption, the deck does pretty well, but can run
into trouble if they get you to top deck mode. Against fiends, once again, a
side-deck will take it out.

The Legendary Fisherman

For my second Archetype Review I will review the Legendary Fisherman deck.
The deck relies around pulling of an infinate protection wall, and here is
how you do it.

PSV-076 The Legendary Fisherman
5/ Water/ Warrior 1850/1600
When "Umi" is face-up on the field, this card is unaffected by any Magic
Cards and cannot be attacked by your opponent's monsters.

LON-023 Tornado Wall
Continuous Trap
This card can only be activated when Umi is active on the field. As long as
Umi remains face-up on the field, any damage to your Life Points becomes 0.
When Umi is destroyed or removed from the field, this card is also
destroyed.

LOD-078 A Legendary Ocean
Field Magic
This card's name is treated as "Umi". Downgrade all WATER monsters in both
player's hands and on the field by 1 Level. Increases the ATK and DEF of all
WATER monsters by 200 points.

The way this works is to first play A Legendary Ocean. Next, set Tornado
Wall. Then, summon The Legendary Fisherman to the field. Lastly, when you
can, activate Tornado Wall. This will make a great wall. The ruling for
Legendary Fisherman is that if he is your only monster when you have
Legendary Fisherman out, your opponent can attack you directly. This is
where Tornado Wall comes into play. When they attack directly, it will
reduce the damage to 0. However, it does NOT reduce the attack to 0 like
Suijin. It only keeps your life points intact, it also only works for
attacks.

Strengths: The Legendary Ocean/ Fisherman combo, when pulled of, is one of
the best combo's in the game. Besides Scientist, and Cyber Stein, this is
definitely the most annoying combo in the game.

Weaknesses: The main weakness of this deck is relying on a field magic card.
MST, HFD, Heavy Storm, or Breaker really hurt. Other than that, this is a
great deck type.

Legendary Fisherman decks are very underrated. Here are some cards that can
help solve that problem of magic/spell and trap removal, as well as some
cards to include for strength:

PGD-008 Maiden of the Aqua
Water/Aqua/4 stars/ATK 700/DEF 2000
As long as this card remains face-up on the field, the field is treated as
"Umi." (However, there is no increasing or decreasing of ATK/DEF due to "Umi
's" effect.) If there is an active field card on the field, this effect is
not applied.

PGD-088 Terraforming
Magic Card
Add 1 Field Magic Card from your Deck to your hand. Then shuffle your Deck.

LOD-087 Magic Reflector
Normal Magic
Select 1 Magic Card that remains face-up on the field and put 1 counter on
it. If the selected card is destroyed, the counter is removed instead of the
card being destroyed.

MRD-027 Suijin
Effect Monster Water/Aqua/ Level 7
Reduce the Attack of an opponent's monster attacking this card to 0. This
effect can only be used once. The card's owner chooses when to use this
effect 2500/2400

MRD-109 Star Boy
Monster Water/ Aqua Level 2
As long as this card remains face-up on the field, increase the ATK of all
water monsters by 500 points and decrease the ATK of all fire monsters by
400 points. 550/500

Water/Aqua/4/1800/800

7 Colored Fish- MRD
Water/Fish/4/1800/800

As you can see, cards have been created that help solve this problem.
Terraforming gets it out quickly, Magic Reflector protects it, and Maiden of
the Auqa substitutes for it. Cards like Suijin, Star Boy, 7 Colored Fish,
and Giant Red Seasnake just aid the deck with some power. Here is a sample

Zombie

For my 3rd Archetype Review, I will be reviewing zombies. In the following
article, I will list strengths, weaknesses, playability, and cards to use
for zombie decks. I will also have a sample deck included. (Article updated
for Dark Crisis.)

Zombie deck was possibly THE LEAST played deck type before PGD, excluding
Plant, Reptile, etc. When Pharonic Guardian was released in America, zombie
decks got a MAJOR boost. Several zombie related cards were released, but
they were still missing arguably the BEST zombie in the game. Vampire Lord.
Zombie decks may finally see tournament play in Dark Crisis. Here are some
cards to consider using in a zombie deck:

PGD-018 Royal Keeper
Earth/Zombie/4 stars/ATK 1600/DEF 1700
You can flip this card into face-down Defense Position once per turn during
your Main Phase. When this card is flipped face-up, increase the ATK and DEF
of this card by 300 points until the end of the turn that this card is
flipped face-up.

PGD-023 Giant Axe Mummy
Earth/Zombie/5 stars/ATK 1700/DEF 2000
You can flip this card into face-down Defense Position once per turn during
your Main Phase. When the ATK of a monster on your opponent's side of the
field that attacks this card in face-down Defense Position is lower than the
DEF of this monster, the attacking monster is destroyed.

PGD-026 Pyramid Turtle
Earth/Zombie/4 stars/ATK 1200/DEF 1400
When this card is sent to the Graveyard as a result of battle, you may
select 1 Zombie-Type monster with a DEF of 2000 or less from your Deck and
Special Summon it to the field in face-up Attack or Defense Position (no
Tribute is required for monsters of Level 5 or more). The Deck is then
shuffled.

PGD-033 Book of Life
Magic Card
Special Summon 1 Zombie-Type monster from your Graveyard In face-up Attack
and Defense Position and remove 1 monster in your opponent's Graveyard from
play.


PGD-038 Call of the Mummy
Magic Card: Continuous
If there is no monster on your side of the field, you can Special Summon 1
Zombie-Type monster from your hand. You can use this card's effect once per
turn.

PGD-041 Tutan Mask
Trap Card: Counter-Trap
Negate the activation and the effect of a Magic or Trap Card that
specifically designates 1 face-up Zombie-Type monster as a target and
destroy it.

PGD-076 Spirit Reaper
Dark/Zombie/3 stars/ATK 300/DEF 200
This monster is not destroyed as a result of battle at any time, although
damage calculation is applied normally. When this card is specifically
designated as a target of the effect of a Magic, Trap, or Effect Monster
Card, this card is immediately destroyed. When this card attacks your
opponent's Life Points directly, 1 card is randomly selected from your
opponent's hand and discarded to the Graveyard.

DCR- DESPAIR FROM THE DARKNESS
Dark/Zombie/8/2800/3000
If this card is placed in the Cemetery from your hand or deck by an
opponent's card effect, Special Summon this card to the Field.

DCR- FEAR FROM THE DARKNESS
Dark/Zombie/4/1700/1500
If this card is placed in the Cemetery from your hand or deck by an
opponent's card effect, Special Summon this card to the Field

Vampire Lord
Zombie /Level 5 /2000 /1500
Each time this card inflicts battle damage to your opponent, declare 1 card
type (spell, trap, or creature). Your opponent selects one and searches his
or her deck for a card of the chosen type and sends it to the graveyard. If
this card is destroyed due to one of your opponents card effects, special
summon this card to the field during your next standby phase.

Royal Keeper is the main level 4 beatstick of zombie decks. It has a strong
defense and high attack when flipped. Pyramid Turtle is 1 card that makes
these decks great. A super Mystic Tomato, Shing Angel, UFO Turtle, etc, for
zombies. Book of life is the Zombie Reborn and Call of the Mummy stops
Torrential Tribute from hurting you. Tutan Mask can help negate, and Spirit
Reaper is a great wall. Spear and Despair from the Darkness are great
against hand and deck destruction. Vampire Lord is the best, just read the
effect.

Strengths: The deck has troumendous speed and swarming abilities. It will
get a major boost with Vampire Lord, and the two darkness cards. This is
definately a new archetype to be taken seriously. This is one of the decks
that can seriously compete with Disruption. It can get special summons with
Pyramid to get around disruption.

Weaknesses: This deck has speed, but can get hurt by a beatdown and hand
disruption IF they can get an early jump.

Light Decks

As requested, my 4th review will be on light decks. Light decks were
incredibly hard to make before LoD, as most of them had attacks under 1500.
Here are some cards to consider when building a light deck:

MRL-012 Maha Vailo
Light /spellcaster / Level 4/ 1550/ 1400
In addition to the effects of equip cards, the ATK of this monster is
increased by 500 points for each card equipped to this monster.

MRL-100 Luminous Spark
Field Magic
Increases the ATK of all LIGHT monsters by 500 points and decreases their
DEF by 400 points.

LON-042 Hysteric Fairy
Light/ Fairy/ 4/ 1800/ 500
Offer 2 monsters on your side of the field as a Tribute to increase your
Life Points by 1000 points. Monsters used for a Tribute Summon or that are
offered as Tributes due to other cards' effects are excluded.

LON-044 The Forgiving Maiden
Light/ Fairy/ 4/ 850/ 2000
Offer this face-up card as a Tribute to return 1 of your monsters destroyed
in battle during this turn to your hand

LON-066 Soul of Purity and Light
Light/ Fairy/ 6/ 2000/ 1800
This card can only be Special Summoned by removing 2 LIGHT monsters in your
Graveyard from play. As long as this card remains face-up on the field,
decrease the ATK of all monsters on your opponent's side of the field by 300
points during his/her Battle Phase

LOD-059 Thunder Nyan Nyan
Thunder/Light/Effect/4/1900/800
If there is a non-LIGHT monster on your side of the field, this face-up card
is immediately destroyed.

LOD-062 Airknight Parshath
Fairy/Light/Effect/5/1900/1400
When this card attacks with an ATK higher than the DEF of your opponent's
Defense Position monster, inflict the difference as Battle Damage to your
opponent's Life Points. When this card inflicts Battle Damage to your
opponent's Life Points, draw 1 card from your Deck.

LOD-071 Asura Priest
Fairy/Light/Spirit/4/1700/1200
This card cannot be Special Summoned. This card returns to the owner's hand
during the End Phase of the turn that this card is Normal Summoned, Flip
Summoned or flipped face-up. This card can attack all monsters on your
opponent's side of the field. You cannot attack your opponent directly if
you attack any monsters first.

PGD-013 Moisture Creature
Light/Fairy/9 stars/ATK 2800/DEF 2900
If you Tribute Summon this monster by offering 3 monsters on the field as a
Tribute, destroy all Magic and Trap Cards on your opponent's side of the
field.


PGD-069        Mystical Knight of Jackal
Light/Beast-Warrior/7 stars/ATK 2700/DEF 1200
You can return your opponent's own monster that is sent to the Graveyard by
this monster as a result of battle to the top of his/her Deck.

       I personally wouldn't run Maha Vialo, but if you are on a budget and
run a lot of equips, he is something to consider. Luminous Spark is a great
boost for light monsters, but it is vulnerable to m/t removal. Hysteric
Fairy is a descent beat stick with a positive effect. Forgiving Maiden is a
great defensive light card. Soul of Purity and Light is a major part of this
decks playability. The special summoning is great. Thunder Nyan Nyan is a
little risky, but has great attack. Airknight Parsath is one of the best
tributes in the game. Speed really helps. Airknight does that. Asuru Priest
is something that might be okay in fun decks. Moisture Creature would work
in a budget light deck, and Jackel is an alternative to Airknight, but I
would rather airknight.

Strategy: Well, the deck is really a themed beatdown. It swarms with Soul
and Purity, then it beats the opponent down.

The strengths: The deck is a little faster and swarms a little more than a
normal beatdown. This can help against a lot of deck types.

The weaknesses: Although the deck is a little faster than normal beatdown,
it also gives up some strength, an important aspect of beatdown. And, like
all theme decks, Tribe Infecting Virus is dangerous against this deck.

WARRIORS
For my 5th Archetype Review, I will be doing warriors. So sit back and
enjoy!

First the history of warrior decks. Warrior decks always were a cool theme,
but weren't anywhere near competitive until Legacy of Darkness was released.
The deck also got a hand disruption version of warriors with the release of
Pharaonic Guardian. In MFC, Amazoness decks got a boost. Now here are some
cards that you might consider using in warrior decks.

All equip cards attached to this monster are destroyed

PSV-094 Goblin Attack Force
Earth/ Warrior/ Level 4/ 2300/ 0
When this card attacks, it is changed to Defense Position at the end of the
Battle Phase. This position cannot be changed during your next turn.

LON-032 Amazon Archer
Earth/ Warrior/ 4/ 1400/ 1000
Offer 2 monsters on your side of the field as a Tribute to inflict 1200
points of Direct Damage to your opponent's Life Points. Monsters used for a
Tribute Summon or that are offered as Tributes due to other cards' effects
are excluded

LOD-016 Freed The Matchless General
Warrior/Earth/Effect/5/2300/1700
Negate the effect of a Magic Card that specifically designates this card as
a target and destroy it. As long as this card remains face-up on the field,
you can add 1 Warrior-Type monster from your Deck to your hand per turn
instead of drawing 1 card during your Draw Phase. Your Deck is then
shuffled.

Warrior/Earth/Effect/4/900/2000
Offer 1 Warrior-Type monster on your side of the field as a Tribute to
destroy 1 face-up monster on the field whose DEF is equal to or lower than
the ATK of this monster.


LOD-018 Marauding Captain
Warrior/Earth/Effect/3/1200/400
As long as this monster remains face-up on the field, your opponent cannot
select another Warrior-Type monster on your side of the field as an attack
target. When this monster is Normal Summoned successfully, you can Special
Summon 1 Level 4 or lower Warrior-Type monster from your hand.

LOD-021 Mysterious Guard
Spellcaster/Earth/Effect/3/800/1200
FLIP: Return 1 face-up monster on the field to the top of its owner's Deck.
At the same time, if there is a face-up Warrior-Type monster on your side of
the field, you can return another face-up monster to its owner's hand.

LOD-022 Frontier Wiseman
Spellcaster/Earth/Effect/3/1600/800
As long as this card remains face-up on your side of the field, it negates
the effects of Magic Cards that designate Warrior-Type monsters on your side
of the field as targets and destroys the Magic Card.

LOD-023 Exiled Force
Warrior/Earth/Effect/3/1000/1000
Offer this face-up card on your side of the field as a Tribute to destroy 1
monster on the field. If this card is used for a Tribute Summon or this card
is offered as a Tribute due to other cards' effects, this card's effect is
not activated.

LOD-024 The Hunter With 7 Weapons
Warrior/Earth/Effect/3/1000/600
When this card is Normal Summoned, declare 1 Type of monster. When battling
that Type of monster, increase the ATK of this card by 1000 points during
Damage Calculation.

LOD-027 The A. Forces
Continuous Magic
For every face-up Warrior-Type and Spellcaster-Type monster on your side of
the field, increase the ATK of all Warrior-Type monsters on your side of the
field by 200 points.

LOD-028 Reinforcement of The Army
Normal Magic
Move one Level 4 or lower Warrior-Type monster from your Deck to your hand.
Your Deck is then shuffled.

LOD-030 The Warrior Returning Alive
Normal Magic
Select 1 Warrior-Type monster in your Graveyard and return it to your hand.

LOD-031 Ready For Intercepting
Normal Trap
Flip one face-up Warrior or Spellcaster-Type monster on the field into
face-down Defense Position.

PGD- 015 Sasuke Samurai
Wind/Warrior/2 stars/ATK 500/DEF 800
When this monster attacks a face-down Defense Position monster, destroy the
face-down
monster immediately with this card's effect without flipping it face-up or
damage calculation.


PGD-028 Dark Scorpion Burglars
Dark/Warrior/4 stars/ATK 1000/DEF 1000
When this card inflicts Battle Damage to your opponent's Life Points, your
opponent selects
Magic Card from his/her Deck and sends it to the Graveyard. The Deck is the
shuffled.

When this card inflicts Battle Damage to your opponent's Life Points, you
can select and activate
1 of the following effects:

* Select 1 card from your opponent's hand randomly and discard it to the
Graveyard.

.        Send 2 cards from the top of your opponent's Deck to the Graveyard.

field that includes "Amazoness" in its card name, or is named "Amazon
Archer".

All Battle Damage to this card's controller that he/she takes from a battle
involving this monster becomes 0.

MFC-061 Amazoness Swords Woman
Earth/Warrior/Effect Lvl. 4/ 1500/1600
The opponent takes all Battle Damage to this card's controller that he/she
takes from a battle involving this monster.

MFC-062 Amazoness Blowpiper
Earth/Warrior/Effect Lvl. 3/ 800/1500
Select 1 face-up monster on your opponent's side of the field during each of
your Standby Phases. Decrease the ATK of the selected monster by 500 until
the end of this turn.

NOTE: There are other cards for Amazoness decks such as Dramatic Rescue,
Amazoness Spellcaster, Amazoness' Pet Tiger and Amazoness Archers. I will
not review them right now, since this is warriors in general, not
Amazonesses specifically.

Gearfread is a good beatstick. Goblin Attack Force is definitely the big
powerhouse for Warrior decks. Although it isn't as good in beatdown anymore,
it is still a great card for Warriors. 2300 Attack is nothing to laugh at,
and it won't be getting killed by any other level 4 while in attack mode
without a power boost. Amazon Archer is another good card. It isn't in the
typical warrior deck, but helps in amazoness, and Budget warrior decks.
Throwstone Unit is another card for budget warriors to consider. This also
applies to Frontier Wiseman. Freed the Matchless General is another warrior,
which, while it looks good at first, hurts when you realize you just drew
most of your warriors and they have been destroyed by mass removal.
Marauding Captain, is probably the most important warrior ever in warrior
decks. The best thing about it is the speed and swarming. Mysterious Guard
is another warrior to consider for a MoP/ Gravity Bind warrior deck. Exiled
Force is yet another great warrior. Great removal, and can kill ANY monster.
Hunter with 7 Weapons is another weenie warrior. A forces and Warrior
Returning Alive are cards to consider, as well as the Amazoness cards.
Another great card is Reinforcement of the Army. Great speed.

Strengths: The strengths of warrior decks are that it has tremendous speed
and swarming abilities.
Weaknesses: The weaknesses are Warriors burn your hand quickly, leading to
locking and topdecking.

Current Status: Although Warriors aren't as great as they were in LoD, they
are still a force to be reckoned with, and can win tourneys.
