– #SOFU-EN018

(Quick Effect): You can discard this card, then target 1 Thunder monster you control; it gains 500 ATK. If this card is banished, or sent from the field to the GY: You can add 1 “Thunder Dragonmatrix” from your Deck to your hand. You can only use 1 “Thunder Dragonmatrix” effect per turn, and only once that turn.

Happy Monday! Thunder Dragonmatrix has a cool name and decent stats for a Level 1 Light Thunder-type monster with 0 Atk and 2000 Def. It also has a useful quick effect from the hand to boost a targeted Thunder monster by 500 Atk. Thunder monsters have high Atk from this set, but an extra boost might be just enough. Dragonmatrix also has an effect upon banishment from anywhere or going from the field to the grave. For that trouble you can add a different copy from your deck to your hand. These effects are mutually exclusive and can only be used once per turn. I think it would have been better if you could use both once per turn, but nothing is perfect. In any case, Dragonmatrix is worth running at least 2 of in the new Thunder deck.

A new week and I went to Bill recently to see if we can look at Thunder Dragons and he gave the nod of approval for two weeks to look at as many of the cards as possible, so here we are starting with Thunder Dragonmatrix.

Dragonmatrix is a Level 1 LIGHT Thunder with 0 ATK and 2000 DEF. 0 ATK is poor and 2000 DEF is good. Thunder has been revived with this archetype now and LIGHT is great. It’s first effect is a Quick Effect where you can discard this card to target a Thunder monster you control and give it 500 ATK. All of the Thunder Dragons have an effect in the hand and this is probably the worst one, but being a Quick Effect helps with another card in the archetype. The 500 ATK boost can be helpful though. If Thunder Dragonmatrix is sent from the field to the GY or is banished from anywhere, you can add 1 Thunder Dragonmatrix from your deck to your hand. Another part of the new Thunder Dragons is that they have effects when banished or sent from the field to the GY, and this one gives some nice recursion. Use this as Link Material for a Linkuriboh and get another copy to discard at a later time to boost a Thunder Dragon. The Fusions in this archetype need Thunder monsters on the field, and for one case in the hand, to Special Summon themselves, so Thunder Dragonmatrix will trigger for summoning them off their own effects as well, plus being a Quick Effect for the hand effect and it is a worthy three of in the deck. A final thing to mention is that you can only use one Thunder Dragonmatrix effect per turn and only once that turn, but I don’t know how broken it would be if it just said you could only use each effect once per turn, but it doesn’t hurt the card that bad.

Ahh, we’re diving into some of the new Thunder Dragon cards and support!  Thunder Dragonmatrix opens the week, and we have a card that’s Level 1, Light and Thunder, with 0 attack but an awesome 2000 defense.  So, as a first effect, also being a Quick Effect, this card can be discarded to have a Thunder Monster gain 500 attack.

By removing this card from play and/or sent from the Field to the Graveyard, you can add another of these from your Deck to your Hand.  So that cycle effect is more or less reminiscent of the original Thunder Dragon discard/retrieval effect, so I appreciate seeing this in this card.

Each effect can only be used once a turn, and only one of each effect per turn.  It’s not strong, obviously, and the attack boost it provides is negligible, but it’s a great combo and cycle card for the Deck, so I see it as a necessary piece of it.  I’d probably use three if only for the cycling itself.

Art:  4/5  Nice color and imagery here.  I don’t quite get ‘Dragonmatrix’ here, but I guess this is the birth/creation of them from that egg.
