doc In another Friday departure from the theme of the week, today we look at the rare Rogue Character Thief Doyen.

One of the other sub-themes for Rogues is tokens. Thief Doyen is the king when it comes to coming into play with lots of them! Along with his cost of 4 you must discard a Character or Item. Put a number of tokens on Thief Doyen equal to the [numeric] cost of the discarded card giving him +1/+1 for each token. If you can hook this up with…oh say maybe… Leutoderm Goliath, then pulling that Item out with a simple Tri-pole Magnet…BOOM! A 19/19/3 super beatstick on turn 4 for a total cost of 6. You know you’d love to pull it…don’t lie!

That would be a great match up with Gearsmith, but lets talk about matching him up with the other token trade, Arcanist. Tokens, tokens, tokens… Voidal Perversion, Skimping Ectomanipulator etc, are just begging to give more and more tokens to the king Thief.

Thief Doyen can also make use of that higher cost card that is turning out to be useless in your current match up. This makes the inclusion of some of the nastier, more expensive cards easier to swallow if you know there’s another use for them.

One thing to be aware of though is this:
If Thief Doyen comes into play by means other than paying for him, he’ll be a 0/0/3. When Characters have 0 life, they’re dead.

In limited, you can throw in a couple high cost cards that you won’t likely use and hope one of them comes up at the right time to throw out the new big dog on the board. In constructed he can easily become a nightmare to your opponent.

Limited: 3.5/5
Constructed: 4/5
