The Phantom Knights of Break Sword – #LEHD-ENC31

2 Level 3 monsters – Once per turn: You can detach 1 material from this card, then target 1 card you control and 1 card your opponent controls; destroy them. If this Xyz Summoned card is destroyed: You can target 2 “The Phantom Knights” monsters with the same Level in your GY; Special Summon them and increase their Levels by 1, also you cannot Special Summon monsters for the rest of this turn, except DARK monsters.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Throwback Thursday this week is a card I referenced yesterday with Raider’s Knight: The Phantom Knights of Break Sword

Generic Level 3 monster built for the PK archetype, but useful in other decks that run Rank 3. First effect is a -1 unless, like PK’s, your strategy can balance out card loss. Burning Abyss do this just as well as PK’s and with the two able to mingle, this Xyz fits into that archetype. Virtual World are a new archetype that are using Break Sword because of its synergy with their Level 3 monsters and how Virtual World can recoup cards from the graveyard, thus negating the first effect’s cost. For PK’s Break Sword is a -1 until your grave effect(s) kick in, then you could be off to the races. With Boots and Cloak the best to banish from the grave and Scales setting things up and Special Summoning itself upon a PK card being banished, Break Sword’s cost is nothing to them. The double Special Summon off destruction and level increase initially seems bad for PK’s being Level 3 based, but then you think of Raider’s Knight to go after another Break Sword, or get to one of the Xyz Dragons or even a Raidraptor using generic DARK monsters. Throw in Link or Synchro monsters that are DARK and the choices are even more for PK and PK/BA.

To get the most out of Break Sword it has to be run with a good amount of PK cards. As a simple 1-for-1 potential, you could tech it in stuff like Virtual World or even Raidraptor, but it is best suited in its archetype.

Throwback Thursday this week brings us to the good old Phantom Knight Xyz we know and love: The Phantom Knights of Break Sword.

Break Sword is a Rank 3 DARK Warrior with 2000 ATK and 1000 DEF. Good stats for Rank 3, and we still got that DARK/Warrior combo we love. The requirements are any 2 Level 3 monsters, which is generic and up Phantom Knights’ alley for Xyzs. Once per turn, you can detach a material from this card to target 1 card you control and a card the opponent controls and destroy them both. Basically we got an Xyz version of Scrap Dragon here that destroys any card that you and the opponent have. At worst, you can pop Break Sword with its own effect, which would get the second effect I’ll mention in a bit, but either way you do get to get rid of an opponent’s card, hopefully their best one. It’s pretty good to have access to something like this for any Rank 3 Deck like how it was nice to have Scrap Dragon for anything using Level 8s. Break Sword also has a floating effect like Scrap Dragon did where if it’s destroyed and it was Xyz Summoned, you can target 2 The Phantom Knights monsters with the same Level in your graveyard and Special Summon them with their Levels increased by 1, but you can only Special Summon DARK monsters for the rest of the turn. This is nice to replace itself with 2 PKs, most likely Level 3s to turn to Level 4s for an Xyz Summon, and there’s some pretty good DARK Rank 4s in the game you could use those PKs for. We already saw Raider’s Knight but we also have Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon, Evilswarm Nightmare, Evilswarm Thanatos, Number 66: Master Key Beetle, Number 80: Rhapsody in Berserk, Raidraptor – Force Strix, Steelswarm Roach, Time Thief Redoer, and many more I didn’t mention since you’d need to get creative to make use of them in a PK Deck. Break Sword overall is a good Rank 3 that does give you more benefits in a Phantom Knight Deck, but again it’s similar to Scrap Dragon where it does have it’s generic use at least. Overall a good Rank 3 you always want to have.

Art: 4.5/5 Yesterday’s scary man on horse was better, but I like this one as well.
