Hello Pojo Fans,

Swordsoul Sinister Sovereign – Qixing Longyuan begins our look at the Top 10 Yu-Gi-Oh Cards of 2022. I don’t think I actually included this into the countdown, but that’s par for the course.

Levle 10 Wyrm with some high ATK/DEF, Qixing Longyuan requires a Wyrm to be involved in the Synchro Summon, so no splashing this guy anywhere you want. Draw potential if you Synchro Summon another Wyrm while he is on the field, lending some assistance to Swordsoul and Yang Zing archetypes. More-so the Swordsoul archetype because of their token producing through Mo Ye and Taia, otherwise with it being Level 10 you’ll likely throw resources into summoning him, even with the potential to Synchro climb and the higher levels Swordsoul can have. The banish spot removal upon a Special Summon from your opponent along with 1200 burn damage helps eliminate opponent monsters and chip away at their LP in a meaningful way. Even with LP not meaning as much, the added injury to losing something almost permanently in addition to the burn is like a 2-for-1.

Responsive effect to an opponent’s Spell/Trap, however it isn’t negation but just another 1200 burn damage and Qixing Longyuan banishes that card. This comes into play much more the lower the LP of your opponent. With the potential to do 2400 damage and take away a Special Summoned monster and then respond right after to any Spell/Trap your opponent plays and finish the burn damage you’re capable of doing puts them in a tough bind. No negation is bad and makes Qixing Longyuan not a good monster to start your game with.

With the ability to get you a draw each time you Synchro Summon a Wyrm alongside two responsive burn effects that banish cards as well, Qixing Longyuan is a pretty good Synchro for the Wyrm Type. No negation is rough, but you have banish ability upon a Special Summon from your opponent and easy 1200 burn damage from either effect on top of banishing a Spell/Trap. Against Pendulum Decks and stuff like Eldlich and decks that use a lot of Continuous Spell/Trap or Field Spells this effect shines despite the lack of negation.

We made it to yet another Top 10 Cards of the year list, and kicking us off for the 2022 edititon at number 10 is a pretty big Synchro for the Swordsol archetype from Battle of Chaos: Swordsoul Sinister Sovereign – Qixing Longyuan.

Qixing Longyuan is a Level 10 FIRE Wyrm Synchro with 2900 ATK and 2300 DEF. Pretty solid stats to have, FIRE is alright, and Wyrm is pretty good. Materials are any Tuner and any non-Tuner Wyrm monster(s), so fairly easy for Wyrm strategies to make with any Tuner. First effect lets you draw a card if another Wyrm is Synchro Summoned while this is on the field, giving you a little more draw power to get into more extenders or hand traps. The other two effects just burn the opponent for 1200 damage and banishes a card depending on what the opponent does, with one banishing an opponent’s monster they Special Summon for the burn and the other banishing a Spell/Trap Card that’s activated or has its effect activate, meaning you can get 2400 burn easily while potentially banishing some of the opponent’s important cards. Hard once per turn on all 3 effects, which is a standard for a ton of cards. It’s a solid boss monster for Swordsoul to go into every once in a while for the draw and to help counter certain matchups. If the opponent is low on LP, then a single action can cause this to burn for game, so there’s another plus.

Advanced Rating: 4/5

Art: 5/5 Longyuan is still a traitor, but he still looks cool as well.

What’s that sound?  It sounds like it’s time for the Top 10 Cards of 2022!  Kicking things off at #10 is a beefy Synchro Monster in Swordsoul Sinister Sovereign-Qixing Longyuan.  Fire/Wyrm, Level 10, 2900 atk and 2300 def, who requires simply a Tuner and 1+ non-Tuner Wyrm Monsters.  Free Draw upon Synchro Summoning other Wyrms is awesome, not quite as broken as say, T.G. Hyper Librarian was back in the day, but still a nice way to net some extra cards.  Being able to remove your opponent’s Monsters as they Special Summon and inflict Damage (1200 at that) is just a deliciously evil Effect.  That doesn’t count the Damage Step, but so few Effects do, so it’s hard to be mad about that.  And, of course, because being able to burn once isn’t enough, the Quick Effect for another 1200 Damage when your opponent activates a Magic/Trap or Effect, in addition to removing that card from play.  This card is just mean.  Each Effect can be used Once per Turn, but that’s enough.  It burns, negates, removes, Draws, and still has that 2900 atk to boot.

Rating:  4.25/5

Art:  5/5  Probably unintentional, but the cards that make this countdown tend to have rather awesome art, and this kicks things off following that marker.  Awful lot of light colors here (which I love) for a monster with Sinister in its name, though.

It’s almost 2023? Already?! This week kicks off Pojo’s Top 10 cards of 2022; 2022 has been a rather interesting year for the TCG, with many powerful archetypes entering the fray. Number 10 is one I personally voted for, Swordsoul Sinister Sovereign – Qixing Longyuan. We did cover it back in May, but the context of this monster has changed since I last reviewed it. It’s a level 10 FIRE Wyrm Synchro monster that requires a Tuner and any non-Tuner Wyrm monsters, so while it’s not totally generic, Wyrm decks like Swordsoul will make it with ease, especially with the bread and butter Swordsoul Strategist Longyuan play. With a decent stat spread of 2900 attack and 2300 defense, it’s no slouch in the numbers department, but it could be better.

My opinion of Longyuan’s effects hasn’t changed much, but they’re still quite powerful; being able to banish a monster and a Spell or Trap, and inflicting a 1200 burn on top of it, applies lots of pressure on the opponent, especially if they use lots of Continuous Spells. Previously, many players, myself included, wrote off Longyuan as a niche pick over Baronne de Fleur, since Baronne’s omni negate would be more versatile in a general setting. However, eventually players began to favor Longyuan; as it turns out, the burn damage (in addition to the original Longyuan’s burn) helped a lot with facilitating OTKs. Additionally, thanks to Yugioh’s controversial time rules, being able to burn your opponent then stall out the rest of the game with Mystic Mine can lead to an easy (if somewhat cheap) victory. Of course, getting a free draw after summoning it doesn’t hurt either. While Swordsoul has fallen by the wayside at this point in time, Longyuan will still be a card to look out for; you never realize how precious LP can be until you’re unexpectedly in OTK range.

Advanced: 4.25/5
Art: 4/5 He might look nothing like his original form, but I’m glad he now has a form he’s comfortable with.
