Hello Pojo Fans,

Superdreadnought Rail Cannon Gustav Max is quite the Throwback Thursday choice.

Back when this card first appeared, it made a lot of noise because of its brute force ability. You could get to the Level 10 monsters and have a big beater on the field with a 2000 LP damage blast that could do it twice before running out of ammo. That’s half your opponents LP, and you weren’t limited to using just the effect and not attacking, if your opponent had 5000 or less and you cleared their field, this was a game-winner. With the support that has come out since, Gustav Max has grown in playability. Many decks that could get to Level 10 monsters like Cyber End Dragon and tech Ra Sphere Mode even have a chance of dropping this on the field. With more within its archetype now, Gustav Max has much more potential than it did when it was first released.

Throwback Thursday brings us to an awesome Train card. Superdreadnaught Rail Cannon Gustav Max is a Rank 10 Earth Machine-type XYZ Monster with 3000 Atk and 3000 Def. Those stats are fantastic, especially on a generic XYZ Monster only requiring any 2 Level 10 monsters. I remember REDM Dragon making this with Shekhinaga back in the day. The reason being that you could burn for 2000 damage once per turn before or after your battle phase. 3000 Atk beater is strong, but 5000 damage will win after they use Destrudo. Gustav Max also has the benefit of not being a hard once per turn. If you are so lucky to have the resources and zones to put multiple on the field, you could activate the effect multiple times per Gustav Max. Trains and many decks get quick win conditions, making this card worthwhile in pretty much every Extra Deck.

For Throwback Thursday this week, we look at the first Rank 10 Xyz in the game and one that is used often in the Rank 10 strategy, Superdreadnought Rail Cannon Gustav Max.

Gustav Max is a Rank 10 EARTH Machine Xyz with 3000 ATK and DEF. Stats are good for a Rank 10 that is very easy to summon, EARTH and Machine are good in the Rank 10 Train deck as well. The summoning requirements are two Level 10 monsters, which after this week you might know how easy it actually is to get two Level 10 monsters on the board. Once per turn, you can detach a material from this card to inflict 2000 damage to your opponent. Pretty short and simple, but at the same time very strong. Taking away a fourth of your opponent’s LP in one simple move is big for going for OTKs. There were once FTKs with this card and Elemental HERO Electrum, but I don’t think they are as viable in Master Rule 4. If you Normal Summon Night Express Knight with Revolving Switchyard on the field, you can use it to summon Ruffian Railcar from the deck as a Level 10 to immediately go for this and detach Railcar for 2000 damage and an End Phase search, you can also just Normal Summon Night Express Knight and Special Summon Derricrane to summon this and detach Derricrane for 2000 burn and a pop, or Night Express Knight and Bullet Train for 2000 damage and an End Phase retrieval of a Machine in your GY (I should say now how important Night Express Knight is in Rank 10 Trains). Gustav allows for a lot of damage upon its summon and is very easy to get out at the same time. A quick 5000 damage on board with one monster is never bad, just imagine when you summon two of these at once.

Ahh, we finally get to a Rank 10 Monster for Throwback Thursday, and although Superdreadnought Rail Cannon Gustov Max isn’t a Train, he still fits nicely and appropriately in with the rest of the cards this week.  This card had one prior review in 2013 and that is the only review this card had had to date, excluding today, of course.

So, in short, in the effort of not being redundant and restating things I have multiple times this week too many more times.  Gustov Max, itself, is a Rank 10 with 3000 attack, but an effect to burn your opponent for 2000 Damage by detaching an XYZ Material.  The true beauty here, is (first) it only uses one Material to do that Damage, but (second) even better, it can attack AND burn in the same turn.

Given what we’ve covered this week, you know easily just how simple it is to bring out a Rank 10 such as this now.  Honestly, this card is very viable, likely at three in a Machine Deck, as long as it involves those elements (and others) to be able to manipulate Levels and grab the right cards.  Who thought we’d be saying it’s easy to make Rank 10s?  Powerful, with equally powerful burn, simple to Summon.  Just fantastic.

Art:  4.5/5  Simple, but fun.  It’s one hell of a cannon.  I’d give it a shot.  Pun intended, and nobody appreciates a pun better than I.
