Play Options: Ranged Attacks
By Vornargith

Let us ponder one of the oddest rules clarifications in the Star Wars Miniatures game …. There are 2 types of attacks stated in the rules – melee and non-melee … not “ranged” – “non-melee.” Apparently the designers wanted to simplify the game by eliminating ranged attacks and created an entirely new category of whuppass…… I don’t get it. Yeah, the game is a bit simpler once you get over the “non-melee” thing, but how much more complicated can the game get if there was a ranged attack? There is certainly room on the stat card for a “Range” attribute.

This Play Option introduces the optional rules of ranged attacks and the range character attribute.

Ranged Attacks: Any attack made against a non-adjacent enemy target is a ranged-attack. The attack of a character with the Lightsaber ability is considered melee when attacking an adjacent target.

Characters have a Range attribute with varying values, usually 12, 14 or 16. The value indicates the maximum effective attack range for that character. A character’s range of attack is still unlimited. However, attacking a target that is beyond range imposes a –1 penalty to the attack roll for every square that a target is over the attacker’s range score.

Example: Boba Fett has a Range of 16. He attacks an enemy 12 squares away. The target is within his range, so he rolls normally to hit. A Stormtrooper with a Range of 12 attacks an enemy 14 squares away. His attack suffers a –2 to hit because the target is 2 squares beyond his Range score.
That’s it really. Now you’ve got to determine the ranges for each miniature. Follow a few rules when determining ranges for characters … most grunts and fringers will have a range of 12. Some obvious non-combatants can have a range of 10. Elite soldiers, officers and minor Unique characters will have a range of 14. Major characters like Han Solo and Boba Fett have a range of 16 as do large vehicles and mounted weapons.
