Sangan – #LDS3-EN001

If this card is sent from the field to the GY: Add 1 monster with 1500 or less ATK from your Deck to your hand, but you cannot activate cards, or the effects of cards, with that name for the rest of this turn. You can only use this effect of “Sangan” once per turn.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Sangan is our little critter choice for Throwback Thursday, and one that is far older than many of the players in the game.

I started playing when this guy was an incredible force in the game, and he found a home straight-away in my Exodia build right alongside Witch and Emissary of the Afterlife. Sangan once was a monster EVERY deck ran, no questions, no understatement. Even if you ran the Magical Scientist OTK/FTK, you ran this to attempt the search for one of your pieces. Once that errata hit though…it was almost lights out for Sangan. To have to wait until the End Phase to get the resource it would search, that was too much for players to have to wait. Instant gratification will always be a necessity and it is the death nail many times for cards that get forced to wait until the End Phase like Sangan and DMoC.

Sangan has so much range with its effect, pairs amazingly with Tour Guide, and will always have a home in many MANY decks. It just isn’t as amazing as it used to be, and that was bound to happen: the powerful ones reign for some time before they are dealt with by the powers that be, and Sangan is no different. Still an amazing, old school card that the game loves.

Throwback Thursday this week brings us to a very classic Fiend monster that has seen a ton of use over the years, even some after its errata: Sangan.

Sangan is a Level 3 DARK Fiend with 1000 ATK and 600 DEF. Meh stats, but DARK and Fiend are always a plus. So upon this being sent from the field to the graveyard, you can search for any monster with 1500 or less ATK, which back in the day make it a great monster for Decks considering they mainly ran weaker monsters with great effects, and later on being used with Tour Guide From the Underworld as one of the best targets off her to either leave on the field for the potential search, or make a Rank 3 (and for a short time be able to search off detaching it as material). All that is great, but that bit applies mainly to the pre-errata version since it did get banned in 2013 for all the use of it with Tour Guide. It came back later on with a hard once per turn clause, alongside the downside of not being able to activate cards or effects of cards with the same name as the searched monster for the turn. This errata has made it more niche, but it has had success. Link it off into Almiraj and you can technically search for hand traps for later, or monsters who have effects that don’t activate, so you can still use them. It was great with Crusaida Aboria to make Halq and combo off after, until Halq was banned of course. The errata really slowed Sangan down, though I don’t even know if it was needed, at least probably not as strict as it is. Sangan is an okay card now, the errata does make it more niche than it could of been without it, but I’m sure you can get some value out of it still.

Sangan (even with an Errata) is a card I didn’t ever see myself reviewing again, but it’s a fun choice for Throwback Thursday.  Stats are irrelevant on this card, Dark and Fiend are the money, as well as the retrieval.  The plethora of playable Monsters across the game here fitting the simply ridiculous criteria of (1500 or less atk) and from the Deck is, and always has been amazing.  (Enough that for a long time you couldn’t use 3…or 2…) the Errata addendum seems a bit overkill, where you can’t activate cards or Effects of cards of whatever you fetch via Sangan.  If you all ready have one out (whatever the Monster in question is) I don’t think even losing that ability (whatever, again, it may be) for that Turn is crippling enough to not play Sangan.  But it helped add a little balance to make the card be playable again.  It certainly seems unnecessary to make it Once per Turn given that potential negation, but I don’t think you’d really need to play more than 1 (possibly 2 in dedicated builds where you have enough to fetch with Sangan to warrant more than 1).  Sangan will likely always have a place in Decks new and old, and it’s still great at what it does.
