Red-Eyes Alternative Black Dragon – Yu-Gi-Oh! Review

Red-Eyes Alternative Black Dragon
Red-Eyes Alternative Black Dragon

Red-Eyes Alternative Black Dragon
– #TN19-EN005

Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. Must first be Special Summoned (from your hand) by Tributing 1 “Red-Eyes” monster from your hand or field. You can only Special Summon “Red-Eyes Alternative Black Dragon” once per turn this way. If this card is destroyed by battle, or if this card in its owner’s possession is destroyed by an opponent’s card effect: You can target 1 Level 7 or lower “Red-Eyes” monster in your GY, except “Red-Eyes Alternative Black Dragon”; Special Summon it, and if it was a “Red-Eyes Black Dragon” that was Special Summoned, its original ATK becomes doubled.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Red-Eyes Alternative Black Dragon is a unique artwork, not one of my favorites belonging to the name of Red-Eyes, but I digress.

The summon restriction isn’t the best way to start off a card, but in its archetype it won’t be hard, and the added benefit of hand or field evens this out. A one-for-one when destroyed and can double the ATK of a REBD forever if you choose REBD as your monster to replace it. This is all well and good, but there are better Red-Eyes cards then this. It can hit the field easily, but it only has 2400ATK, you’d be better off running almost anything else that can Special Summon itself somehow and you wouldn’t likely have to dedicate archetype support to do so. Even within its own archetype I think it may only be a one in most builds because there is just better cards.

After so long, Red-Eyes finally gets an Alternative form, and of course it’s worse than Blue-Eyes Alternative. The name is kinda obvious, but it’s Red-Eyes Alternative Black Dragon.

REABD is a Level 7 DARK Dragon with 2400 ATK and 2000 DEF. Low stats for the level, just like Red-Eyes Black Dragon, but DARK is a great attribute as always and right now might be the best time to be a Dragon I’d say (assuming the list doesn’t hit Guardragons anytime soon). It cannot be Normal Summoned or Set, just like Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon. It must be first Special Summoned from the hand by tributing a Red-Eyes monster from your hand or field and you can only Special Summon this once per turn this way. Kinda mean to make this need a tribute when Blue-Eyes Alternative just needs to reveal the original Blue-Eyes White Dragon, but at the very least this can tribute any Red-Eyes monster, not just Red-Eyes Black Dragon. At least Red-Eyes has some good graveyard revival cards like Red-Eyes Spirit and Red-Eyes Return alongside the Sliver’s Cry and Return of the Dragon Lords that Blue-Eyes could use as well, and this can be revived off said revival cards (minus Silver’s Cry) if summoned properly and sent to the grave. If it is destroyed by battle or an opponent’s card effect, you can revive any Level 7 or lower Red-Eyes monster in your graveyard that isn’t REABD, and if you revive Red-Eyes Black Dragon, the monster’s original ATK becomes doubled. A free revival for a monster being destroyed is lovely, also since it’s asking for a tribute to summon already. I like the benefit of doubling Red-Eyes Black Dragon to 4800 ATK since if you revive it, it’s still just a vanilla monster compared to having the Geminis and Effect Monsters you could get back. It’s a good Red-Eyes support card, though one thing I will complain about it lacking is the ability to be treated as Red-Eyes Black Dragon like how Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon is treated as Blue-Eyes White Dragon, but that isn’t the biggest thing in the world. It’s still a solid card for Rank 7 fodder, can be Fusion Material for Meteor Black Comet Dragon since it doesn’t specify Red-Eyes Black Dragon for the Fusion Material, and be another 2400 body that’s easy to get on board. Good, just wish it was Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon levels of good.

Art: 5/5 Should of mentioned this yesterday, but Kazuki Takahashi art is always going to get a 5/5 from me basically because he’s an amazing artist, as you can see here with how this card looks.

Red-Eyes get the alternative treatment…which sounds like it should be bad, but let’s see.  Red Eyes still isn’t quite near the Dark Magician tier of support, but it’s out there in hoards, nonetheless.  REABD shares all the same initial stats and things of that nature as the original REBD.  This card can only be Special Summoned (and only from your Hand) by Tributing a Red Eyes Monster on the Field.

You can only do this once per turn, but let’s look at this…you’re still giving up one Monster (literally still a Tribute) and it doesn’t have to be a high Level one (which would be bad, being more Tributes wasted on the whole).  If destroyed in Battle, or by card effect while in its owner’s possession, you can Special Summon a Level 7 or lower REBD Monster from your Graveyard.

That kinda makes up for the Tribute initially to get this guy on the Field.  It can’t be another REABD, and you get an attack doubling if you can Special Summon the original REBD.  4800 attack isn’t anything to sneer at, and that looks like it’s permanent, but without protection, you just have a 4800 attacker out there, who’s still a vanilla, and vulnerable to everything.  Better than yesterday, but not by much.

Art:  5/5 gain, the darkness, the aura, the Dragon itself, everything here is magnificent.
