Infernape/Heatran deck fix
June 2, 2009

Well, well, well… I’m BACK!! I haven’t posted a deck fix since last year. Well with all of the excitement of summer and major tournaments coming up, I’ll be back in the garage for some deck fixes. I’ll try to at least one in each week for a while, so send your decks in for some tune-ups. Anyway, here is the first deck I have reviewed in a while:

--------------------------------------------------

Hello there, I'm Johnny from Hong Kong.
Deck:

Jirachi (LA, 34/146) X3
Jirachi (RR) X1
Heatran LA(6/146) X1

Heatran LA(30/146)X1
Heatran Lv.X SF X2
Chimchar (MD) X3
Monferno (MD) X2
Infernape (PL) X3
Infernape Lv.X (DP) X2
Pachirisu (GE) X1

Bebe's X3
Felicity's X2
Roseanne's X2
Rival X2
Rare candy X3
luxury ball X1
premier ball X3
buck's training X2

metal energy (normal) X5
Metal energy (special) X4
fire energy (normal) X8
Call energy X2
Warp energy X1
cyclone energy X1
Health energy X2

strategy:
use pachirisu to get heatran lv.X out, use jirachi doom desire to KO other pokemon, heatran to get energies back, build up infernape on bench, also use heatran Lv.X to get discarded fire energy back.
simple enough?

--------------------------------------------------

Hey Johnny, welcome to the Hollow. Your deck is good idea, but I think it can be made better and more consistent. Let’s see what I can do:

Pokemon – OK, let’s take out the LA Jirachi, because while One Desire is OK, Doom Desire’s effect is negated by a simple Warp Point, Switch, or retreat. Put in 2 more RR Jirachi to help with draw power. Without Jirachi, there will be little need for metal energy, so replace the metal Heatran with another fire-type one. You can only have 4 in any combination of a Pokemon and its Lv. X. This deck really does not cooperate well with the Infernape so take out both. Also, take out 1 PL Infernape and put in 2 MD Infernape. These will give the deck more consistent damage without the coin flips, but you can still use the PL Infernape for a haymaker (if you feel lucky). Finally, add a 2-2 line of Baltoy-Claydol, because, let’s face it, every deck needs these guys.

Trainers & Other Stuff – OK, this needs work. Roseanne’s Research is a great, great card, and it is my opinion that each deck needs 4. Add 2. Felicity’s Drawing is not very good in this deck, because Heatran does not bring energy back, it only prevents discarding them by attacks. Take out both and replace with 2 Volkner’s Philosophy, because it has greater potential upside for less. Take out both Rival (it really is not great) and both Buck’s Training (you will have more than enough damage to deal without it). We will be taking out more energy to make up for this, so add all of these: 1 Looker’s Investigation (great in certain situations), 2 Aaron’s Collection (great for late game energy if you do discard a lot), 2 Broken Time-Space (help’s evolve Infernape), 1 Stark Mountain (Infernape has a great free retreat, so this can help transfer energy), 2 Warp Point (every deck needs these, especially to avoid an active Heatran or Claydol), and 2 Night Maintenance (to get back Pokemon).

Energy – Complete haul-over. Take out everything, and only use 12 Fire Energy.

Final Decklist

Pokemon (20):
3x Jirachi (RR)

2x Heatran (LA - 6/146)

2x Heatran Lv.X (SF)
3x Chimchar (MD – 57/100)
2x Monferno (MD)
2x Infernape (MD)
2x Infernape (PL)
2x Baltoy (GE)
2x Claydol (GE)

Trainers/Supporters/etc. (28):
3x Bebe's Search
4x Roseanne's Research
2x Underground Expedition
2x Volkner’s Philosophy
1x Looker’s Investigation
2x Aaron’s Collection
1x Luxury Ball
3x Premier Ball
3x Rare Candy
2x Broken Time-Space
1x Stark Mountain
2x Warp Point
2x Night Maintenance

Energy (12)
12x Fire Energy

--------------------------------------------------

OK, well I hope this helps. Try to get out Jirachi quickly to help with draw power. Quickly get out an Infernape and a Claydol, and a Heatran to follow. You will find that the Claydol helps tremendously with draw power, and the supporter line should help you significantly, too. Good luck with your tournaments or other battles coming up.

As for the rest of you, I hope to have another fix next week. Thanks for reading!
