Cadet-Captain Mike

Name: Neptune (France)

Card: FS #004 (Rare)

Points: 14

Masts: 5

Cargo: 3

Moves: L

Guns : 2S, 2S, 3S, 3S, 3S

Hit %: 283 (S), 0 (L)

Link : Phillipe Jordan

Ability: This ship gets +1 to her boarding rolls.

With five masts, small cargo, and a boarding bonus, the Neptune's role is clear. She's supposed to ram and board enemy fighting ships, to kill their crew; her cargo is too small for stealing cargo effectively. The fact that her best cannons are in the front of the ship supports this; she can get at least one shot off on her victim, maybe two if the angles are right. Her linked crew, who gives a Captain and an S-board, would turn this ship into a crew-slayer with few equals.

I'd load this ship with Jordan, a Helmsman, and Lenoir the canceller, to deal with subs and those pesky ships that can't be shot within S range.

That leaves one cargo free in case the enemy ship gives up a coin in a boarding action instead of losing a crew, and enables the Neptune to take on just about anything, and hurt it badly. Such a set-up would not be cheap (28 points), but I bet it would be a lot of fun.

Goldship rating: 1.8 / 5

Gun Ship rating: 3.6 / 5

Boarding rating: 4.3 / 5

Value for points: 3.0 / 5

Draco Starcloud Neptune

As parts of Fire and Steel, Wizkids seems to be designing their 5-masters with less traditional combat in mind and focusing more on other methods of battle. The Neptune has been geared for boarding, but is she worth it?

If you decide she's to be a battleship after all, she's got plenty of good firepower: two 2S and three 3S cannons. Get in close and most enemies will regret letting you.

Her ability is a plain +1 to boarding rolls and when equipped with her link Phillipe Jordan she is able to board from S away. The Neptune will have a hard time hunting though with a base move of L and only three spaces to hold either precious gold or crew means she'll need a lot of trips between raids.

If you can catch someone with the Neptune, their treasure or crew are as good as gone. Get into a fighter with a dedicated battleship or a ship immune to S-range and the Neptune is in trouble.

I give the Neptune a 2.5/5.
