Cadet-Captain Mike

Name: Saint James (England)

Card: FS #062 (Common)

Points: 10

Masts: 3

Cargo: 2

Moves: S+S

Guns : 3S,3S,3S

Hit %: 150 (S), 0 (L)

Ability: Galley. If this ship shoots at a ship that was previously shot at by another ship this turn, she gets +1 to her cannon rolls against that ship this turn.

The Saint James won't win any prizes for her looks. But she makes a fair fighting ship for a fair price. The key word here is "fair."

There isn't a lot to say about her, good or bad. Her cargo is on the skimpy side; speed and guns are average. If she follows another ship around and lets that other ship shoot first, her cannons drop to 2-rank.

But HMS Nautilus already has 2-rank cannons, plus better speed and cargo and a bonus against the Americans, for the same price tag. There are a bunch of other English ships that also give better value for ten points

-- the Dover, the Lord Walpole, the Phoenix, the Henry VIII... you get the idea.

There are also ships out there that are worse values for ten points. The Saint James is neither awesome nor awful. If you don't have those older ships in your collection, this one may do good things for you. But you can certainly do better.

Goldship rating: 2.7 / 5

Gun Ship rating: 2.7 / 5

Boarding rating: 2.7 / 5

Value for points: 3.0 / 5

Draco Starcloud Saint James

Like the Lepanto, the Saint James is a boat destined for backup fighting, though she's more of a clean-up hitter than a slugger.

The Saint James has three 3S cannons, but if she targets a ship that has already been fired at, they become 2S cannons. Her S+S base move will serve her well in getting close to already-attacked targets and hitting them hard. She (or should it be "he" since it is named James?) only has two cargo spaces, so pick your crew well. If you do use her, a captain is a must and a Mustekteer might be a good second crew.

I wish the Saint James had been given at least one L-range gun, but she's still a good ship. At 10 points, you get a fairly good deal.

I give the Saint James a 3/5.
