Cadet-Captain Mike

Name: El Villalobos
Card: MI # 062 (Uncommon)
Points: 7
Faction: Spain

Masts: 2 (rating: 2 / 5)
Cargo: 2 (rating: 2 / 5)
Moves: S+S (rating: 3 / 5)
Guns : 4S,5S (rating: 1.5 / 5)
Hit %: 50 (S), 0 (L)
Ability: On the turn this ship is pinned, eliminate one crew and one mast from the rammed ship.

This is a woeful-looking little ship. Her speed is average, her cargo is bad and her guns are worse. But her ability makes her very dangerous indeed. If I understand the rules correctly, she does her special damage to ship and crew when she rams, and then the enemy has to make a normal ramming roll or lose a second mast, and can lose a second crew if the Villalobos boards and wins. Even a five-masted monster still loses a mast and crew to this Spaniard's ram, and then has to resolve the ram normally. That's a lot of damage from one little ship, although if she picks on five-masted ships, she's going to have a very short career.

And if I'm reading the rules wrong, and her victim doesn't have to make a ramming roll or be boarded, it still means the Villalobos effectively wins every ram and every board. Is that worth seven points to you?

Her two crew will always include a Helmsman if a-ramming you will go. A Captain would be a waste, since she can't shoot worth a darn. A crew like Admiral Alarico Castro, who lets you reroll one die roll per turn, could be very useful; you'd redo your losing boarding rolls.

Alternately, you could skip the crew and the ramming, and use her for gold. Two cargo is pathetic for gold, but she only costs seven points, so she could probably pay for herself in one or two cruises. If the enemy picks on her, put her helm over and ram the fool!

You won't build your fleet around the Villalobos, but she's a useful helper to a good fighter. It's hard to go wrong for seven points, and you get more than your money's worth from this fine little ship.

Sumpbeast El Villalobos

At first glance this ship is made for ramming. The ability and speed mean she can get to the enemy. The cargo hold is a bit small for treasure running. The two guns are pretty useless with a 33% and a 16.6% chance of hitting at short range. I would leave this ship at home and take something cheaper with a more useful role. For a fairly low point cost and decent speed El Villalobos generously receives a 2/5.
