Holy Hannah, this ship scares me!

The English are best known for their fighting ships, and this one is a superb example. Her speed isn't great, but it's typical for big gunships, and a Helmsman puts her into the "fast enough" category. Her cargo is above average; you could use it for gold, but you wouldn't want to. This ship was built for fighting, and she's devastatingly good at it.

Four 2L cannons is just about as good as it gets. When you're shooting at ships, they essentially become 1L cannons, and that really IS as good as it gets. Her hit percentage jumps to a phenomenal 333%. She's in the same league as the awesome five-masted HMS Titan, the double-hitting HMS Leicester, or my favorite killer, the special-edition USS Franklin. The only thing worse than a salvo from HMS Gallows is two salvos in the same turn, and a crew like Commander Spencer Portland can make that happen.
I'm getting nightmares just thinking about it.

Does HMS Gallows have any drawbacks? She doesn't get the +1 gunnery bonus against forts or Marines on land, but those are rarities, and even then, her 2-rank cannons are more than good enough. A ship that can't be hit by L cannons could pound her to bits with impunity. If this worries you, put a Musketeer or a Marine on her, along with her Helmsman and Captain. Her point cost is not small, but you're most emphatically getting what you pay for, and the high cost lets you load her up with crew.

Realistically, there's nothing wrong with this ship. I give her full marks, something I almost never do. HMS Gallows will be the centerpiece of many a fine English fighting fleet. Just warn me if you're going to use her, so I can be out of town when it happens.

Sumpbeast HMS Gallows

Before I write anything let me state that I like the English warships. This ship is on my “want list”. Big guns, four masts and a good cargo hold means I can load up the ship with crew. The “world hater” ability adds to the effectiveness of this warship. With four guns hitting on 2’s at long range there is no worry about scoring at least a few hits. Ships that cannot be hit by L range cannons could cause a problem, but I have not seen many of those around lately. Like most English warships HMS Gallows is slow and expensive, so the obligatory helmsman and captain are going to push the point cost into the early twenties. I would take the HMS Gallows over my favoured HMS Bretwalda even though HMS Gallows weighs is at 16 points.

This expensive and fearsome ship gets a 3/5.
