Pirates of Davy Jones’ Curse - #025 Davy Jones

Name:  Davy Jones

Set: PODJC

Card #: 025

Rarity: Rare

Type: Crew

Cost: 11 Points

Faction: Cursed

Link: Flying Dutchman

Ability: Limit. At the beginning of each of your turns, choose any ability possessed by any ship or crew in play; this character has that ability. You may make a different choice each turn.

Flavor Text: The oceans are the dominion of the sea-devil Davy Jones. From them he summons and commands the most foul and evil of sea creatures. He can harness the powers of storms and disasters, and he rejoices in turning the sea red with blood. But most of all he craves the souls of all who sail “his” kingdom.

We’re finally getting to the titular character of the newest set, and coincidentally the main bad-guy in the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie!  Though this game piece is clearly NOT based on the new Disney character, and thankfully so, it’s not like we need ANOTHER version of old squid head right about now.  This piece is a pure wild-card.  The cool part is that he can copy any ability in play, yours or your opponent’s, and you can make a different choice each turn.  The bad news is that he’s a whopping eleven points.  Now that may be a deal-breaker to some, I’m sure for most player’s they’re just anxious to get one.  The link to the Flying Dutchman is obvious, and important to give her another cargo spot she sorely needs.

That one auction that ended over $28 is skewing the averages for this piece.  He’s by and far the most popular crew produced for this set, and the most useful.  I’d think a real average of about $7.50 is more reasonable.  There’s a couple BIN’s for $10, which is slightly more excessive.

Pirates of Davy Jones’ Curse - #024 Papa Doc

Name:  Papa Doc

Set: PODJC

Card #: 024

Rarity: Rare

Type: Crew

Cost: 8 Points

Faction: Cursed

Link: The Unblinking 99

Ability: If an enemy ship is within S of this ship, you can use this ship’s action for the turn to try to possess a target crew on that ship. Roll a d6; on a result of 6, the target is immediately assigned to this ship. Its nationality changes to match the nationality of this ship.

Flavor Text: Papa Doc discovered that he can possess both the dead and living, and he has set his gaze upon the purity that is Josephine Godiva. For if he makes her his one hundredth soul, he will have the power to take on the loa themselves.

The Papa Doc character is not a WizKids invention, he’s a well established mainstay of the Voodoo religion, and his image has appeared in pop-culture in a variety of different forms, but he’s more well known as Baron Samedi.  I think my personal favorite is Geoffrey Holder as the dancing priest in the Roger Moore’s Bond premier Live and Let Die.  WizKids must be basing their version off of the infamous “Papa Doc Duvalier” the 20th Century Haitian despot who liked to dress up at Baron Samedi, according to Wikipedia.

This particular piece has one of the more magical abilities found in this set, on the right roll, he can take over an opponent’s crew, and more or less make them permanently worthless to you.  That roll is a long-shot though, and in order to make Papa Doc really work, you will need a re-roller on your ship, and some how, I just don’t think it’s all that feasible.  Why give up a full action for a slim chance at permanently disabling one crew?  And EIGHT points?  Too expensive.

These are the types of crew that drive me nuts.  It’s an incredible ability that can turn a game on it’s ear, if it weren’t so damn expensive.  When I say expensive, it’s over-costed (by at least 3 points), and you give up too much.  If this piece cost 5 points, and DID NOT require you to lose your ship’s action, it would see much more play, and no, it wouldn’t be broken either, because you STILL have to roll the six.  Make that roll without additional abilities, and this piece would be fine.  As it is, he’s virtually unplayable.

You can always tell the rare crew that are worth playing by the prices they command in the secondary marketplace.  This guy he’s just not that great, ergo, not a very high value.

Next time – We’ll finish our cursed week with a smaller ship, one that everyone can afford.

Redsled

Davey Jones:

Redsled says: obviously the best crew in the game – as well it should be…. He also is the most expensive at 11 points. He is almost a certain lock to go along with the Flying Dutchman. There really are no other Cursed ships that can handle his point cost. His effect to copy abilities only applies to those crew/ship currently in play. If someone has their Calico Cat turned face down and you may not copy her effect. If someone’s Titan has been sunk; you may no longer copy that either. You can copy anything else even a sea monster. With 28 points of a standard 40 point build allocated to Davey and his Dutchman be careful about what you choose to round out your fleet with. Better throw on a captain and a helmsman out of your own points rather than use Davey to copy them from someone else ( now you only have 8 points left )

Rating: with Dutchman  - 5

On any other boat  - 2

Papa Doc:

Redsled says: like your neighbors Pomeranianway more bark than bite here. Pricey 8 points for a less than 20% chance of snagging somebody off another boat. Plus you actually have to get near that target ship which is fine if you’re attacking a little ship. But rarely are any characters of significance on the little dinkers anyway. Are you really going to use him to try and capture an explorer? So you sail in on your opponents big boy with thoughts of snagging his Admiral Castro – and then you get cancelled by Nemismo Diaz…..
