I actually pulled this piece last week while I was on vacation.  Oh you didn’t know I was on vacation?  Why do you think I haven’t written any COTD for awhile?  I had finals, and then a week’s vacation up in Monterey and the San Francisco Bay Area!  I took tons of maritime pictures, having visited both cities “Fisherman’s Wharfs” and also their Maritime museums.  If you check my signature on the message boards you’ll find a link to some of the photos I took.  Including some nifty pics of the three-masted Balclutha which is docked at San Francisco’s Hyde St. Pier, and is a MUST-SEE if you’re in the bay area and you like Pirates.

So on vacations I ALWAYS try to find Pirates packs and buy whatever I can, then I introduce the game to my friends.  This time was no exception, and unfortunately FH was the largest ship I pulled, so I had to use it.  Drawbacks?  Can you say THREE cargo?  However, since crew of any nation can use their abilities you can get +1 by throwing a Bianco or FM Ismail on board.  Still that doesn’t give you much cargo space.  Her guns are suspect too.  50% to hit on 3 of 4 guns in short range ain’t gonna cut it.

BUT she does have that nice 1S+1L move, and she’s fairly cheap.  Out of a sealed draft game, this should be snatched up pretty quick, in constructed, not so much.  Also, Captain Rontacourt is mentioned in the flavor text, but there’s no named crew by that moniker.

My Ratings:

Playability 2.5 of 5 (+1 in draft)

Collectability 2 of 5

Next Time – How about a couple of crew?  Would you like that?  Two crew?  A “CREW-FER”?  Sounds good to me.

Ho-hum. This is a distinctly average addition to the Pirate establishment: mid-priced points-wise, 3 average guns plus one slightly better than average gun, but all at short range. 3 measly cargo spaces – which is low for a 4-masted ship. Average S+L movement. Her ability is really of little significance unless you happen to be a newbie with very few pirate crew at your disposal. For players with larger collections, this ability is a nonentity, since the Pirate faction has a far wider spread of abilities and more named crew characters than any other faction – so what’s the possible advantage of this ability?
I'm afraid this is another make-weight ship contributing to the required numbers for this latest release, and she is destined to see very little action, given that there are plenty of better Pirate vessels available for 12 points.

My rating – 2/5. Not bad - just very average…
