Aethereal HMS Nautilus

This isn't too bad for a 10-point common. You get three masts, each with a 2-rank cannon, and one L-range cannon. You also get a decent movement speed in S+L and you also have the Schooner ability, which is ok to have on this ship. The ability, +1 to your cannon rolls against Americans, is ok, and very good if you know that your playgroup likes Americans. Only three cargo slots means that this thing isn't much of a treasure hauler, especially since you'll want to put a Helmsman on this, but then again, why would you want this ship to be a treasure hauler? This isn't a bad ship, but there are better choices; I'd probably rather play the HMS Oxford which, while lacking an L-range cannon, adds another mast and gives you a more useful ability for only two more points.

I have a long term love affair with the novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne.  If you haven’t read it, you should.  Really.  It’s classic Science-Fiction before the term was even created.  Why do I bring this up?  Captain NEMO and his submarine the Nautilus are the main focus of the novel (well, not really, but you know how these things work).  The book has been adapted, most notably in the 50’s by Walt Disney, and is sorely due for a big-budget really good blockbuster.  Alas, probably won’t happen.  But hey, I get a ship in the Pirates game, and until we get submarines, this is the closest thing.

However, it’s not a sub, it’s a schooner, which is nice.  She’s cheap too, at only 10 points.  But as so often is the case, you get what you pay for.  Still, if you can fit her in, she makes a nice secondary attack vessel, because you aren’t going to put her in as a treasure runner.  The thing that stands out are her level 2 guns, because any time you can get a 2/3rds chance to hit +1 against Americans, you’re doing well.

And as a common, well you should have her already, but if not, she trades for a buck or two.

Next time – It’s TOPNWE’s choice, though he hasn’t made them yet.  If not, something cool will be here.  Check and see, it’ll just have to be a mystery until then.
