Pirates of the Barbary Coast – Commodore Steven Decatur #094

Name:  Commodore Steven Decatur

Set: PBC

Card #: 094

Rarity: Rare

Type: Crew

Cost: 7 Points

Faction: American

Link: Intrepid

Ability - “This ship’s crew cannot be eliminated unless she sinks.  Once per turn, roll a d6. On a 5 or 6, this ship may be given an extra action

Flavor Text: Commander of the American forces on the Barbary Coast, Decatur has vowed that no ship shall be taken by pirates. He has even gone to the extreme of sinking his own ships rather than allow them to be captured.”

The majority of crew costing 7 points or more are Marines.  How TWO American crew got the same ability (though the wording is reversed) for the same cost in consecutive sets is beyond me.  Yes, that’s right, Decatur has the EXACT same ability and point cost as John Paul Jones.  Whoop-de-do.

Pirates of the Barbary Coast – Brent Rice #098

Name: Brent Rice

Set: PBC

Card #: 98

Cost: 4

Faction: American

Rarity: Common

Ability - This ship gets +1 to her cannon rolls against any non-American ship or fort.

Flavor Text – “No one knows when Rice signed on with the American Navy; he’s just always been there. Although he has no rank, his stories of ship engagements are so exact, and his knowledge of naval strategy so advanced, even Preble consults with him.”

Now this is a pretty useful ability, especially since it’s non-faction specific.  Sure, 4 points is a little high, but that ability is so useful, you’d have to consider placing this ugly cur on your gunship.

My Ratings:

Playability 4 of 5

Collectability 2.5 of 5

Friday – Mondays are always big ships, Wednesdays are Crew-Fers and Friday’s are little ships.  So guess what, a little ship…

Aethereal Commander Steven Decatur

Hmm. Seven points is quite a bit for a crew member, but this guy has a decent set of abilities. First off, your ship's crew are invincible unless you sink. Not bad. Then you get the Enterprise/Titan ability.
That's more of use than the first ability, if you ask me. I'm not too crazy on this dude because of the seven point cost. Maybe if he had the "give the same action twice" ability instead and cost a point or two less, he'd be more useful. This guy fits best on your big gunship, obviously, but I think he's just a tad too pricy for what you get.

Rating: 2.5/5

Brent Rice

So, for four points you get +1 to your shots against anything that isn't American. Now that is pretty cool. Obviously this goes well on any ship that shoots. A good gunboat has all (or almost all) rank-2 cannons (Enterprise, I'm looking at you), and if you throw in this guy they become all rank-1 cannons, which turns your ship into an engine of destruction. This guy goes well with Decatur, as Decatur will protect him and let you do even more shooting on a lucky die roll. I like this guy quite a bit. Four points is slightly pushing it, but I think he's worth it. Naturally, if America is popular in your area, you can skip this guy.

Now I confess I’ve only invested in a few packs of POTBC (because to be honest, galleys don’t grab me), but I was pleased as punch to pull this guy out of one of the first packs I opened. ‘+1 against ships of any other nationality’ is one of the new abilities in Barbary Coast, and by my reckoning, it’s pretty good value for 4 points (at least compared to some other abilities which are a lot more expensive, with far less certain results). In fact, it’s doubly good because Brent Rice gets +1 against forts as well as ships.
Now the pool of available American options still hasn’t quite caught up with the other established nations yet - still no American ‘add five build points’ ransom character, for instance, which is a real drawback against the other nationalities all building with 5 points more than you. But Brent Rice goes some way to make up for the defecit. I played scruffy old Brent aboard the Enterprise - which meant I was (in effect) firing five x 1-rank guns. All I had to do was avoid rolling ones to hit – and ones are an auto-miss anyway, so you can’t get much better than that! Very effective, believe you me, and a definite boost to the American cause.

My rating: 4/5. An essential addition to any serious player of the American faction
