 WildWill

Pirates of the Barbary Coast Dragut & Aruj Barbaross

Name:  Dragut

Set: POBC

Card #: 045

Rarity: Common

Type: Crew

Cost: 5 Points

Faction: Barbary Corsairs

Ability – “This ship gets +1 to her cannon rolls against forts within S of her. She gets +1 to her boarding rolls.”

Flavor Text:  Dragut retook Tripoli from the Spanish after a bloody and bitter battle. He learned that there was more to life than just sailing, and that any man who sailed with him had to be able to fight both on land and on sea.

Again, another character with an ability that ties into boarding.  The boarding theme runs rampant throughout this entire set.  For five points Dragut gets not one, but two key abilities that are situational, but universal enough to be useful.  +1 to cannon rolls against forts is awesome on a fort-killer ship, which can also defend itself because he gets +1 to boarding.  5 points seems pricey, but if you’re going up against a fort-heavy opponent, it’s almost a necessity.

And who can beat that picture?  Man is he UGLY.

Name:  Aruj Barbarossa

Set: POBC

Card #s: 039

Rarity: Rare

Type: Crew

Cost: 10 Points

Faction: Barbary Corsairs

Link: Kheir-ed-din

Ability – “This ship may move and shoot using the same move action. If this ship wins a boarding party, she may capture the crew with the highest point cost instead of eliminating it. This captured crew becomes cargo worth its point cost in gold when unloaded at your home island.”

Flavor Text – “Known for his red beard, Aruj is credited with the creation of the first Barbary Corsair fleets. Under his leadership, they began their domination of the Barbary Coast by proving that the galley could take on the biggest European ships.”

I wanted to take a look at the SINGLE most expensive character in the game, Barbarossa because he has such a multi-part ability.  We know that Move and Shoot is worth 3 points, so the second portion, the ability to capture a crew that becomes worth it’s point cost in gold when unloaded must be 7 points, (or maybe it’s  less, since he’s linked).    When you DO link him to Kheir-ed-din you get the possible second action for ANY ship for 16 points and 1 cargo space.  That’s WAYYYYYY too expensive for me, but I wouldn’t say I wouldn’t try it.  Seems to me to be just too expensive to use.

Not a bad price for a brand new Rare Portrait card.  On this set, a wait and see attitude needs to be taken.  I don’t see this set as being overly popular thus far, so even the best cards might be undervalued.  Still, most other Rare Portraits  only go for a buck or two, so this one trading at an average of 50% to 100% higher than normal is  an interesting fact.

Next time – Whenever I look at a new faction I like to take a look at their best ship of the line, a couple interesting crew, and lastly their best 1 master.  Friday is no exception.

Save me a ration of Rum me hearties.  The wind’s a blowin’ and I’m a steerin’!

Aethereal Dragut

So, trying to give some boarding support, eh Wizkids? For a pricy five points and a cargo slot you get +1 to your cannons against forts and +1 to your boarding rolls. I haven't taken the time to analyze the entire set yet (shame on me, I know), not to mention we don't have the full rules set for Barbary Coast yet, so take my judgment of this guy cum grano salis. That said, I wouldn't play him. Five points is way too much for merely +1 to boarding and +1 against forts. If it were +1 to boarding and +1 against ships then I'd take a much closer look at this guy. But as he stands, five is too much to pay for this dude. If boarding becomes pretty good in the future, he might be worth re-evaluating, but I still think he's too expensive.

Aruj Barbarossa

Ten points! I think that's the most expensive crew member to date. Man, do you get a lot for that hefty cost. First, you get the Captain ability, which normally costs you 3. Next, if you manage to win a boarding roll, you get to capture your opponent's highest cost crew member instead of killing it. Not bad. Then it can become treasure worth its cost when you unload it at your home island. Not bad! This can give you a ridiculous lead in the gold race if you capture a few guys, especially if you can do it from their gunship (just don't get yourself slaughtered in the process). If you play this guy, play a Raft with it too in case you get gunned down. This guy most likely isn't worth it in a 40-point game, but in 50 and higher (especially higher
:\) I would take a good, long look at him.
