Do I deliver on my promises or what?  I promised today’s review would be a piece type we’ve never looked at before, thus I bring unto you, The Fort.  This is Fortaleza Dorada, the “Golden Fortress”.  It’s a big more expensive than some of the other forts, but the ability more than makes up for it.  Having to get within S range of this fort to hit it is key.  Though that ability would be much better if the fort had more than 1 L range cannon.  Of course if it DID have more than 1 L range cannon, it’d be broken.

Forts are basically built in one turn when you get enough gold to pay for it at your home island, then explore a wild island, build a fort, and voila!  In 30 point games, getting a fort built is basically a winning condition.  In larger point games it’s less of one, but still a strategic necessity.  In larger point games, multiple forts might be needed.  The nice thing is that now they don’t count towards your fleet build.  If you’re unfamiliar with using forts, play a couple friendly games first, and then go to town with your newfound knowledge of how to safely blow the crud out of your opponent.

Forts are commons, but they show up less often than other commons.  But they show up often enough for doubles and trading (I pulled THREE of the same fort in my first 3 packs of Revolution) and they go for a buck or two on Ebay.

Next week:  Hmm…nothing selected thus far…perhaps some French or English.

I M Einstein Fortaleza Dorada-revolution-spanish-5 gold

For the last piece of spanish week we take a look at a fort. With forts you can only give them attack actions so you can't move(obviosly),explore, or repair. This fort has 6 cannons-the most for any fort in the game. The cannons are all 3's with differing ranges. L-range cannons cannot hit this ship which is a huge bonus because most ships have atlest 1 L-range cannon if not 2. 5 gold is tied for the costliest in the game, but with the effect and the effect it's worth it.

Aethereal Fortaleza Dorada

A great fort to play with. 5 gold and a little exploring later, you've got yourself 5 cannons that have a 50% hit rate (one L-range), and the great ability

of only being able to be hit at short range. If you don't have any good treasure haulers, the 5 gold cost might be a little hard to pay, but really, if

you're playing with a couple of forts, you should have a treasure hauler of some description in your fleet to get those forts built. I kind of wish this

thing had a 2-rank gun or two, but overall this is a very solid piece and worth including if you're playing Spain. And don't forget that forts don't count

towards your build total, so feel free to toss in a fort or two into any build you're using, if you can support the gold cost.
