Number 93: Utopia Kaiser – Yu-Gi-Oh! Throwback Thursday

Number 93: Utopia Kaiser

Number 93: Utopia Kaiser
– #BLHR-EN093

2 or more “Number” Xyz Monsters, with the same Rank, that have Xyz Material
Once per turn: You can Special Summon Rank 9 or lower “Number” monsters with 3000 or less ATK that have different Ranks from each other from your Extra Deck, up to the number of Xyz Materials with different names attached to this card, but their effects are negated, then detach 1 Xyz Material from this card. For the rest of this turn, unless this effect was negated, you cannot Special Summon, and any battle damage your opponent takes becomes halved. While you control another “Number” Xyz Monster, this card cannot be destroyed by battle or card effects.

We’ll take a break from the Link Monsters to take a look at the prize card they reprinted in BLHR, Number 93: Utopia Kaiser.

Kaiser is a Rank 12 LIGHT Warrior Xyz with 2500 ATK and 2000 DEF. Those are stats for a Rank 4 or maybe a Rank 5, not a Rank 12, but I will give a pass to LIGHT and Warrior. The summoning requirements are any 2 Number Xyz monsters with the same rank that have Xyz material. Well that sounds pretty specific, but not too impossible, though maybe not something you casually do in every duel, it’s still feasible. Once per turn, you can Special Summon Rank 9 or lower Number monsters with 3000 ATK or less from your Extra Deck that have different Ranks from each other, up to the number of Xyz materials this has, but their effects are negated and then you detach a material from this, and for the rest of the turn you cannot Special Summon and any damage your opponent takes is halved. Well that’s a lot of restrictions, but it can summon several Xyzs from your Extra Deck, which allow for some interesting plays. I remember this could help get the D/D/D Rank 8 and the Raidraptor Rank 10 onto your field before the PK Rank-Up was banned, but now that clearly isn’t as possible anymore. Still, there’s some potential in an effect like this, even in Master Rule 4, and this is a million times easier to summon with Number 39: Utopia Double I should mention. Kaiser here is also protected from destruction while you control another Number Xyz, which I feel like maybe it should have that protection without the requirement of another monster on your field. Still, the card can allow for some weird and interesting potential plays and I kinda like it. Not the most competitive thing in the world, but it’s fun to figure out something with this big guy.

More Utopia…this card for Throwback Thursday has one prior review.

Alas, missed by me, I’m pretty sure I mentioned last time we did a Utopia card how over them I was.  Anyway, Warrior/Light, 2500/2000, that’s all familiar, Rank 12, and two or more Number XYZ Monsters of the same Rank with XYZ Material, generic yet specific.

This is honestly one of those really strange, bizarre, character specific cards.  From a competitive or practical stand point, it’s not a card necessarily worth playing, but it can do some things.  The Special Summon aspect attached is nice, as is the protection part.  Although you have to control (an)other Number XYZs for that.  That halved Battle Damage part is something you never like to see.

Just everything here is involved in so many hoops to jump through, from Summoning to effects, and it all gives me a headache.  There are better forms of Utopia, some even worth playing.  This would be for fun and casual matches, at least in my opinion.  There are some shortcuts these days around some of the hoops attached to this card but even so…

What are we looking at here? A boss monster with bad stats and not so great protection. If you use his effect, Battle Damage becomes halved. Are there better Utopia artworks? Yes. Okay, enough with the bias. Number 93: Utopia Kaiser is a Rank 12 Light Warrior-type XYZ Monster with 2500 Atk and 2000 Def. 2500 Atk on a Rank 12 is bad. To properly XYZ Summon this card, you need 2 or more Number XYZ Monsters with the same Rank with Material attached. So that’s at least 4 monsters from the field already to build up to this. Hopefully those Materials have different names because you get to Special Summon from the Extra Deck Rank 9 or lower XYZ Number XYZ Monsters with different Ranks up to the number of differently named materials attached to Utopia Kaiser. Then you detach a material, inflict half battle damage, and cannot Special Summon anything else after. So let’s unpack that. You can’t really flood the field anymore unless you have enough Extra Monster Zones, but if you could, those new monsters have their effects negated and cannot be Ranked Up until the next turn. They can attack, but damage is halved, and anything above 3000 Atk will just wall all of your monsters. The only protection Utopia Kaiser has is from destruction if another Number XYZ Monster is under your control. That’s not enough protection. I think this is a lose more card. Summon only for nostalgia. Competitively, just keep the requirements this would have instead. Throwback to a card you throw into the trade binder.
