Number 39: Utopia Double
– #DUPO-EN008

2 Level 4 monsters – (Quick Effect): You can detach 1 material from this card; add 1 “Double or Nothing!” from your Deck to your hand, then Special Summon from your Extra Deck, 1 “Utopia” Xyz Monster, except “Number 39: Utopia Double”, by using this face-up card you control as material, and if you do, its ATK becomes doubled, but it cannot attack directly. (This is treated as an Xyz Summon. Transfer its materials to the Summoned monster.) You can only use this effect of “Number 39: Utopia Double” once per turn.

Another day, another Utopia monster. Number 39: Utopia Double is a Rank 4 Light Warrior-type XYZ Monster with 0 Atk and 2500 Atk. He requires any 2 Level 4 monsters to properly XYZ Summon, but with those stats, Utopia Double is not worth running independently as a Rank 4 option. His Quick Effect requires the use of the Spell Card Double or Nothing in your Deck and then some other Utopia XYZ Monster in your Extra Deck. Double or Nothing lets you double the Atk of a monster that had its attack negated and then lets it attack again. Again, Double or Nothing needs to be searched from the deck by the effect of Utopia Double, so this has the potential to be a completely dead card in the Extra Deck. If you’re lucky, you get the search off the Quick Effect and then the proper XYZ Summon of any Utopia XYZ Monster using Utopia Double as material. The new Utopia monster gets double Atk but cannot attack directly. The effect would have been much better if the search effect was not mandatory or even just came after the Special Summon. As such, you basically have a hard once per turn one punch Otk if nothing gets negated at the cost of 2 Level 4 monsters and the detach of one material. This also means that Utopia Double does not do much during turn one. Utopia Double is definitely a fun card to consider, but really doesn’t make sense competitively because the Spell Card is not competitive. But you can double its score if you want.

Oh boy, had enough with forms of Number 39? Well either way here’s Number 39: Utopia Double.

Utopia Double is a Rank 4 LIGHT Warrior Xyz with 0 ATK and 2500 DEF. The DEF makes up for a very poor ATK stat, and I do like the LIGHT Warrior combo. The summoning requirements are any 2 Level 4 monsters because generic Rank 4s are still appreciated in 2019. Utopia Double has a Quick Effect where you can detach a material from this card to add a Double or Nothing! from your deck to your hand and then Special Summon a Utopia Xyz from your Extra Deck by using this card and whatever Xyz Materials it has on it left as the Xyz Material, said Utopia has its ATK doubled but cannot attack directly, and this is treated as an Xyz Summon. This is nice for getting Number 39: Utopia to OTK with Double or Nothing! as you can get your 5000 ATK Utopia to negate his own attack so you can use Double or Nothing! to get said Utopia to 10000 ATK and attack again with it, it’s a cute little combo. You can also get Utopia Beyond off of this with 6000 ATK to debuff your opponent’s monsters to 0 ATK or you can summon Utopia Kaiser (which is in Battles of Legend for those that don’t have the prize card) to summon more Numbers from your Extra Deck (assuming you got Link Monsters as well). There’s some cute things to do with this, which kinda warrants you playing the brick that is Double or Nothing! The effect of Utopia Double is a hard once per turn, as it probably should be, even though it might feel like Konami is putting these clauses on cards just because. Utopia Double is a card that is fun to mess around with and I’m sure you can do some fun OTKs and niche plays with it, a nice piece to the Number 39: Utopia legacy.

Art: 5/5 It’s Utopia attacking after you use Double or Nothing! which is odd since this has no ATK to speak of, either way it looks very pretty with that background.

All those over Utopia Monsters raise your Hand.  (Reads card, gets progressively annoyed as I get through the text, slaps 1/5 on it, and closes with ‘have a nice day’).  Okay, let’s be a little more open than that.  Light, Warrior, Rank 4, any two Level 4 Monsters to be XYZ Summoned, 0 attack and 2500 defense…but 6 rows of text, so I’ll assume the 0 attack isn’t as big a downside as it initially appears.

So, a Quick effect here, let’s you detach a Material from this card to Special Summon another Utopia XYZ Monster (other than this one) and use this as Material for it.  You also get a ‘Double or Nothing’ Magic card from your Deck to your Hand.  (That lets you Target a Monster that had its attack negated make a second attack with doubled attack during the turn you use it, and it’s a Quickplay…not limited to XYZ either).

Anyway, back to the other part of that effect, the Utopia you bring out has its attack doubled (assuming you’re successful in all this) but it can’t attack directly.  A big boost with a limit that prevents it from being asinine is a good thing.  I suppose you could combo the Double or Nothing you get with that for a hell of an attack, might be enough to win you a game.  It’s got some potential, even if I’m bored/annoyed with it.

Art:  4/5  Pretty body, pretty aura, pretty lights and glowing, I’m a fan.
