Hello Pojo Fans,

Number 11: Big Eye is our Throwback Thursday and one of my favorite Xyz monsters to use.

Generic Rank 7 needing two Level 7 monsters. A 1-for-1 that is far from even: stealing your opponent’s monster is never an even trade for them. Sure, Big Eye can’t attack the turn you use this effect, but you can Link Summon, attack with the monster you stole, use its effect(s), tribute it, you don’t need to attack with Big Eye when you use this effect. If you end up using the effect twice the restriction becomes useless as you can get rid of Big Eye because it has served its purpose. How good is stealing an opponents monster for almost nothing? Snatch Steal and Change of Heart are banned, Brain Control had to be errata’d and Mind Control, while unlimited, isn’t the best of those previously mentioned, or Big Eye. The only one left untouched is Enemy Controller, but that costs you EC and a monster of your own and none of these are permanent like Big Eye is (and Snatch Steal gives your opponent LP while being an Equip Spell). While it isn’t the best Rank 7 ever, it is still one of the best even today. It would be a stronger effect if it were a Quick-Effect, but with the addition of Link Monsters into the game you can easily link climb after using up the effect and stealing a Link Monster.

Strong ATK/DEF, generic, and a strong 1-for-1 gaining you steep advantage if it goes through. Level 7’s aren’t as popular anymore, and the effect may be considered “slow” but it is still a great effect and a great card.

Throwback Thursday brings us to a card that’s hard to believe is as old as it is and is the best Rank 7 in the game (that’s currently TCG legal at least), and that is Number 11: Big Eye.

Big Eye is a Rank 7 DARK Spellcaster Xyz with 2600 ATK and 2000 DEF. Fine Rank 7 stats, good Type and Attribute as well. Generic materials of 2 Level 7s is great. The lone effect is a soft once per turn, back when those were more common, to detach a material to steal an opponent’s monster, and you don’t even have to give it back. The only downside is this being unable to attack. Stealing an opponent’s monster without worry about giving it back means you can literally do whatever you want with it from using it as a beater, to making use of the monster’s effects, or just using it as Extra Deck material. As long as you control that monster, it’s yours to keep. Big Eye losing its abiltiy to attack the turn you do this is fair in exchange since you made the opponent more vulnerable. Overall, Rank 7 Decks should see this as a staple for how good it is to steal opponent’s monsters. How many cards have we had that did that were/are banned or limited currently or previously without errata? At least Big Eye is healthy enough to stay in the game.

Advanced Rating: 4/5

Art: 2/5 As advertised, it’s a big eye.

This is old (and yet not THAT old) all to say we haven’t looked at this in nearly a decade, since initial release, it seems.  Number 11:  Big Eye, Rank 7, Dark/Spellcaster, and 2600/2000 needing any two Level 7 Monsters for an XYZ Summon.  This card is definitely good; better than before it some ways, worse in others.  If you have room for a generic Level 7 in your Extra Deck, this isn’t a bad choice.  Spellcasters are better than ever, one could argue, and I wouldn’t fault a Spellcaster player using one of these either.  But given the builds and hybrids you can run, and what else we have in the Extra Deck pool these days, I don’t fault anyone either who just can’t fit one in.  A built in Snatch Steal at the cost of one XYZ Material is a solid Effect.  A Targeting Effect, as so many are these days, and though you can’t attack the Turn you use that Effect, it’s a great combo play, if nothing else.  Take something else big or of the same Level as this (or whatever else) and Extra Deck yourself into something bigger and better.  It’s pretty middle of the pack these days.  It’s not the quickest or best Effect out there, but it’s strong enough, easy to bring out, and there’s PLENTY of worse cards out there.
