The ability to cause your opponent to discard his/her hand is a petty good effect, but it also causes you to do the same; so unless you didn’t have a hand to begin with, you’re going to have a bit of trouble, but so will your opponent. The effect is also a bit tricky to pull off because your opponent might play something like Money Tree Ghosts.

I give this card a 2/5. There are better cards to use than this. Some cards include Pant Devil Attacks, Jhudora’s Evil Eye, Intimidate, and Banishment.

Today we review another totem, the Shell Acara Totem, and like the others, it's costly effect is useful.  With this one, if you choose to discard it *before* your turn (before you even draw a card or untap Neopets), each player discards his or her entire hand.  This gets useful when you have an opponent that keeps a lot of cards in hand, or uses those potions that help boost stats in contests and then bounce back to their hand if they win.  The downfall of this card is that not only do you lose 2 points in your bank, but you have to discard your hand as well.  At least you will get to draw an additional card right away when your turn starts.  Of course, you could always use Shell Acara Totem when your hand is empty!

There's also the psych-out factor, where you bank this card and just let it sit in your bank.  Your opponent will know it's there and will almost be forced to use anything they get as soon as possible so that you don't have a chance to render it useless by discarding their hand.

Ratings:

This is a good totem, but it almost hurts as much as it helps.  There are a lot of opponent's that keep pretty slim hands, and that means that this card wouldn't be worth anything more than the 2 bank points (and the psych-out factor).  But, for all the times it helps, I'll give it a 3.8 of 5.

Rating: 2.8

This Item is one of four Totems released in the Mystery Island expansion.
Although its stat bonuses are almost as low as most 4 point bank cards and its bank point value won't win any games quickly, this cards isn't used for its stats or bank points; it's used for its ability. If played at the right time, the Shell Acara Totem can help you control your opponent's hand without damaging your own. If your opponent is playing the popular Kacheek Shepherd/Armory of Kass/Turmac combination, this card is a great solution.

The fact that you have to discard your own hand may be a problem if you're not playing a deck specifically designed around Totems. Card draw is a very important part of the game, and if you're not playing a deck build around Totem's abilities, this card may hurt you as well as your opponent, defeating the card's purpose. I wouldn't play this card in any deck but a Totem deck with the Kougra Archaeologist. With the Kougra Archaeologist, discarding a handful of Totems is less detrimental considering you can bring one of them back each turn.
