The codestone is a new item type in the Neopets TCG arsenal.  All of them allow you to equip them to a pet in the contest if you played the item for that contest and won.  It then becomes an Equipment card.  All of the other codestones (Bri, Har, Lu, Mau) have give +4 to a specific arena.  The Zed Codestone, which in the online world is one of the higher class red codestones, provides +4 to any arena, making it at least somewhat useful in any contest.

 

The primary strategy for codestones is using it as a free equip.  You use it in a contest, and if you win, you still get to bank or draw, but you also get the option of tagging the codestone to a pet for free.  So, if you already have a good shot at winning and just want to add on a couple points to make sure it stays that way, these could be useful to you.  I would expect to see these mostly in decks that use Maintenance Tunnels and/or Put on Display.

 

Useless fact:  The Zed Codestone was given away as the trophy for the Mystery Island release tournament.
