The Best of the Cheap Guys
by Jason Matthews

What follows is a top ten listing of the one cost to recruit non-army Marvel characters. I concede the fact that this early in the game some of my picks may seem out of place. I will tell you that I based my placement of the picks on how good they were in general. I tried to value them as how good they would be if you placed them in any deck as well as a specific deck. Some characters may be great in a specific deck but some of the characters would be placed higher on the list because they could fit into more decks. I hope that this will help some of you understand why I made the choices I did. Feel free to email me your opinions on the pick order, lack of a character in the top ten, or just with any general question about this article you may have to pojojason@hotmail.com and I will do my best to get back with you.

10 Loreli, Savage Land Mutate Attack 1 Defense 1

Ability: While attacking Lorelei, characters get -2 ATK.

Loreli comes in at the bottom of the list in tenth. Although her ability makes her desirable in a deck that lacks good defensible early creature the more affiliation specific characters that place higher have a significantly better abilities.

9 Longshot, Rebel Freedom Fighter Attack 2 Defense 1

Ability: Activate >>> Name two different cards. Reveal the top four cards of your deck. If both of the named cards are revealed, put all copies of the named cards into your hand. Put all remaining cards on the bottom of your deck in any order.

Longshots ability is what makes him rank in at nine and above Loreli. You may have to risk naming the wrong card to hit but I find myself believing that this card is going to get significantly better in the future. His attack being set at two also gives him a little more pressure in the early game and ups his value. He gets number 9 also because he functions well outside of an Xmen deck.

8 Moira MacTaggert, World-Renowned Geneticist Attack1 Defense 1

Ability: Activate >>> Recover target stunned X-Men character. Put Moira MacTaggert on the bottom of your deck. Use this power only during the recovery phase.

Moira’s ability is very nice in that you can get a very good combat advantage out of her. The drawback to her is her usefulness is focused solely on the Xmen. I like her a lot but I would prefer it if she could help anyone. Another positive out of her is that her ability is doesn’t have a discard added to the cost and most good abilities will get you with that little extra cost.

7 Senator Kelly, Anti-Mutant Advocate Attack 1 Defense 1

Ability: Activate >>> Target player loses endurance equal to the number of army Sentinel characters you control.

One of the better affiliation specific abilities. The great thing about Senator Kelly is the fact that he has no additional cost beyond exhausting to use his ability. Not having the drawbacks of discarding to use his ability or getting shuffled back in gave Senator Kelly the ability to go to seventh place.

6 Boris, Personal Servant of Dr. Doom Attack 1 Defense 1

Ability: Activate >>> Search your deck for a plot twist card. Reveal that card and put it into your hand. Shuffle Boris into your deck. Use this power only if you control Dr. Doom.

Okay I start off with this card by saying that I am torn over the fact that you have to control Dr. Doom as a limitation to using his ability. Now I know that there are multiple effects that make it to where you are considered to control Dr. Doom but it is still a limitation. That being said his ability is pretty dang strong. Doom decks are looking like they will based around control and having the ability to search out a specific card to answer your problems with is pretty dang good in control. The ability to get any plot twist gets Boris the sixth spot, but having to shuffle him into the deck afterwards keeps him from going any higher.

5 Forge, Cheyenne Mystic Attack 2 Defense 1

Ability: Activate, discard an X-Men character card from your hand >>> Search your deck for an equipment card. Reveal that card and put it into your hand. Shuffle your deck. Return Forge to his owner's hand.

The majority of equipment in this game is very game affecting. Dual Side arms makes guys bigger, Advanced Hardware makes guys bigger and more useful, and Unstable molecules makes your guy tougher. Those are just a few of the ways that Forge can use his ability to make himself and other characters better. He is good in Xmen but I think he will most likely find his home in a Fantastic four deck. He rates the fifth spot because of the power of equipment gives him an edge.

4 Ant Man, Scott Lang Attack 2 Defense 1

Ability: Activate >>> Target front row character is not and cannot be reinforced this turn.

This is where people will start to complain about the picks. The illustrious top four. Ant Man garners a top four showing because his ability can be used in any deck and he has a Attack of two. He is one of the few one recruit cost character to actually have a two attack and his ability is pretty strong. The best situation for using this ability is when you can actually not have the initiative and you opponent has to lay out his formation first. Then you drop the bomb on him with an ability that can make him take lots of break thru damage.

3 Phantazia Attack 1 Defense 1

Ability: Activate >>> Target defender gets -2 DEF for this attack.

Well this lady definitely doesn’t get a lot of looks but her ability should make it otherwise. She get a high placing in the listings because again she can go in any deck and her ability is not affiliation specific. The minus two to target defender is a great way to make you little guys more effective and the opponents big guys more vulnerable. Welcome to number three slot Phantazia but don’t ever wear that outfit again it makes you look fat.

2 Invisible Woman, The Invisible Girl Attack 1 Defense 1

Ability: When Invisible Woman comes into play, put an invisibility counter on her.

Whenever Invisible Woman is attacked, you may remove an invisibility counter from her. If you do, negate that attack effect. (The attacker does not ready.)

You can’t hit what you can’t see! The invisible girl version of Invisible Woman pulls in a second place slot in a close race for the coveted number one spot. It was a hard decision but her ability to negate an attack could only push her as far as number two. Key thing to remember about her ability is that you may remove a counter and that is only after the attack has been made legal. So remember if you don’t fear the attack you don’t have to remove the counter. So as Invisible girl sits on the side lines crying about only making the second place we go onto number one.

1 Destiny, Irene Adler Attack 0 Defense 2

Ability: Activate >>> Whenever target character becomes stunned this turn, its controller loses 4 endurance. Use this power only during the build phase.

This character has the most damage potential of all the one drops. When used properly she is a solid four endurance loss a turn to your opponent. Remember that the build has three steps so you can actually see how your opponent is going to set his or her formation and make them pay with this little old lady. She is simply a no-brainer in Brotherhood and could make the cut in any other deck as well. She has none of the restrictions that make character cards hard to use. Give this girl the crown because she just made Queen of the One Drops.

Well there you have my review of the top 10 one recruit cost characters and why I value them so. If you have a difference of opinion feel free to email me at pojojason@hotmail.com and I will get back with you as soon as possible. Until then I look forward to hearing from all of you.
