Green Goblin – Altered Ego

Hmmm….looks like we are going to finish this week up with a card that brings a slight twist to the game of versus as we know it.  Today we are going to look at Green Goblin-Altered Ego.

Ok so it looks like the guys at Upperdeck decided to throw some new ideas at us and this is what they came up with.  By paying 13 endurance and activating this character, you give each other player a 13 endurance loss.  This makes Green Goblin a double-edged sword.  Personally swords are not my thing…I think I will pass…..

What this guy does provide is an awesome offensive power that gets better and better since he also has flight and range.  (You better hope that if you are playing with this guy that you get initiative.)  With a 17 attack, this guy is only rivaled by Juggernaut…wow!  However, to make up for this, Green Goblin is balanced out by an incredibly low defense.  Since his defense is a mere 11, you will probably get stunned while attacking unless you go after your opponent’s smaller characters hidden in their support row.

Bottom line is this:  If you are going to run a SS deck, only use this guy until you can get your hands on Dr. Octopus – Doc Ock and try to stay away from using this guy’s ability if you can.  This is because by turn 7, stunning your opponent’s characters and keeping as much endurance as you can is more important than taking a cheap shot.  Otherwise you will leave your opponent with an attack step, possibly resulting in a lower endurance on your behalf.  Another reason to stay away from this guy’s ability is those new cards out there that negate a character’s activate abilities.  What are you going to do if you pay the 13 endurance only to have your ability negated?  Cry…..

Ratings:

SS Constructed deck  - 2.0/5.0 …..Dr. Octopus is much better than this card.

Limited – 2.5/5.0 …Having a powerhouse that has flight and range on your side of the field on turn 7 could win you the game, but having a loyalty factor keeps me from giving this guy a better rating.

Johnny Blaze Green Goblin, Alter Ego - Woah 17 ATK for a 7 drop. Am I reading this correctly? The only other 7 drop out there right now with 17 ATK is Juggernaut. The difference is Juggernaut has a 17 DEF to go with his high ATK. Green Goblin doesn’t and can even be stunned by most 6 drops out there. This is a recurring theme I see in this new Spidey set. High ATK but low DEF values. Gobby does have Loyalty so don’t expect to see him without some of his other Syndicate buddies. And his power. Oh his power is just so outlandish. Let me see you activate Gobby and pay 13 endurance then each other player loses 13 endurance. Sounds too good to be true. And I like how they made it unlucky 13 for Gobby. This alone can end the game if you have have enough Endurance to survive a 13 loss.

Constructed – 3/5: Like I said before his power sounds too good to be true. I’m sure people will find a way to abuse it. We’ll have to wait and see. Otherwise Gobby is a definite in a SS deck. Just watch out for his low DEF at 11.

Limited – 2/5: Not a great choice here with his Loyalty but then again with his power and if you have initiative it can be a game breaker.

Paul Hagan Green Goblin, Alter Ego --

I'm vastly amused with Green Goblin, Alter Ego. Once you are ahead in the endurance race, you can end the game whenever you see fit. Please note, too, that this ability isn't activated, meaning you *can* turn your 17/11 sideways before going nuts with his ability. The only real downside to this guy is that he has a small butt, but he more than makes up for it by having the largest ATK for a 7-Drop in the game.

In limited, play this guy if you have enough Syndicate men. Play him, enjoy, and wreck people. First pick in draft, and the first one in the deck in Sealed if you have enough Syndicate.
