Hello Pojo Fans,

Another Battle of Chaos look on Pojo, and I can’t believe we didn’t review this little guy straight-away: Magikuriboh.

Main Phase or Battle Phase effect activation gives you some flexibility when activating this effect, however you have to take damage in some fashion, so the likelihood is you’ll be discarding Magikuriboh during your opponent’s turn. Discard to Special Summon a Dark Magician or Dark Magician Girl from the deck or grave is a fantastic deck thin and will get you either your boss monster for the deck, or a monster that can hold her own. You will hopefully have Dark Magic Circle on the field when activating Magikuriboh and then will banish using Dark Magic Circle having been triggered by Dark Magician. Getting quickly to Dark Magician Girl as well helps those playing only one copy of her for the chance of getting a draw two off Soul Servant, I guess you can swap Magikuriboh in place of Bond Between Teacher and Student. While you have ways to get to Dark Magician, you would also like a way to get to him quicker and use those other means for other cards. You’ll want to pull from the deck before going after the graveyard.

Magikuriboh adding itself back each turn when a Spellcaster is destroyed by battle or card effect ensures you’ll be getting another chance at using his effect. You can use Magikuriboh as a defense and get him back any time your opponent gets rid of a Spellcaster of yours, win-win. Lets not split hairs though: the add-back is great, but thinning your deck and getting to your Dark Magician or Dark Magician Girl to set up plays as early as Turn 0 is the best effect.

Magikuriboh is a complete searcher for the archetype. Constant use is possible, it is still a monster that can defend from an attack, and gets you to what you want in the archetype. Also, “Dark Magician”, so anything considered “Dark Magician” in the deck is available.

Battle of Chaos finally comes to Pojo following up on the 20th Anniversary Week and we’re getting straight into the Dark Magician support with Magikuriboh.

Magikuriboh is a Level 1 DARK Fiend with 300 ATK and 200 DEF. Those stats aren’t doing much, but DARK and Fiend is still nice. First effect is a Quick Effect during the Main or Battle Phase of a turn you took damage by battle or an opponent’s card effect, letting you send this card from the hand to the graveyard to summon a Dark Magician or Dark Magician Girl from your Deck or graveyard. Instant Dark Magician access sounds nice, and the condition isn’t the hardest to pull off. You’re likely going to take damage at some point unless your defenses are just that good, but even then it’s hard to protect from burn. This should be easy to pull off at the very least. Second effect triggers upon your face-up Spellcaster(s) being destroyed by battle or opponent’s card effect, letting you add this card from grave to hand, which is nice to recover this to try and get the first effect to trigger again, hopefully while under Dark Magical Circle for removal. Each effect is a hard once per turn, and thankfully you get both in a turn as a nice benefit. It’s a decent card really. It’s likely to be live in most of the opponent’s turns, so I see no reason not to have a copy potentially.

This is far and away the best looking Kuriboh.  Dark/Fiend are great, stats and Level are what you’d expect.  A Quick Effect to bring out DM or DMG from your Deck OR Grave simply by discarding this card (so long as you took Damage via your opponent, Battle or Card Effect).  Trading in a Level 1 for a 6 or 7?  That’s a great 1-for-1 for the player.  Oh, and if a Spellcaster of yours is destroyed, again, by Battle OR Effect, this card cycles itself back to your Hand.  Each Effect is once per Turn, as it should be.  Really this card is no good to you on the Field, but Hand or Grave it does great stuff for the DM player.  Not much else to say, the number you play should be dependent on the number of DM/DMG you play.  If you’re running 1-2 of each (or just one) I’d use 1, maybe a second.  But if you’re running 3 DM and say 1-2 DMG, I’d fit 3 in if you had the room.

At last, we finally start covering cards from the relatively recent set Battle of Chaos, starting with its notorious Dark Magician support. Our first card this week is Magikuriboh, a level 1 DARK fiend with 300 attack and 200 defense, making it statistically identical to the original Kuriboh (that is, perfectly normal for a level 1 monster). Since it specifically has Dark Magician in its text, it has synergy with both Dark Magician support and Kuriboh support, fittingly enough.

Both effects are a hard once per turn (sounds like a broken record, doesn’t it?). Whenever you take battle or effect damage from your opponent during the main phase or battle phase, you can discard Magikuriboh to special summon a Dark Magician or Dark Magician Girl from your deck or graveyard. While it’s hard to trigger on your own without crashing a weak monster (like, say, Magician’s Rod or an Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring), it does mean you’re not completely dead if you have to pass on nothing. That said, not allowing you to special summon Dark Magician from the hand is rather painful, so it’s best if you can quickly dump a DM to your graveyard. Incidentally, if one of your spellcasters is destroyed by battle or card effect, you can add Magikuriboh back to your hand from your graveyard. The implication is pretty clear; as long as your opponent keeps destroying Dark Magician, you can repeatedly bring it back at the cost of some life points. This little “loop” sounds cool in theory, especially when Dark Magic Circle is up, though in practice it’s not too strong since all they’ll have to do is banish or negate Magikuriboh (fortunately, Eternal Soul should be protecting Dark Magician). Still, a surprise DM is better than nothing and Magikuriboh is certainly a fun card, though probably not a staple.

Hello folks, today we’re reviewing a card that Konami seems to be pushing quite heavily, as I believe they released a playmat and deck case with this little furball on it. It makes sense though as Magikuriboh is essentially the culmination of Yugi’s 2 most iconic monsters: The Dark Magician and Kuriboh.

Now I’ve never been a huge fan of the brown ball (he’s cute, but that’s about it), but he certainly does have some personality. Out of the many different variations of Kuriboh, I do think this is my favorite as I’m a sucker for the DM aesthetic.

As for the card itself, what does it do? As long as you’ve suffered damage this turn, you can pitch him from Hand in order to Summon out a Dark Magician or Dark Magician Girl from Deck or Grave. Not only that, but whenever a Spellcaster you control is dying, you can return Magikuriboh from the Grave back to your Hand.

Both of these effects are really good for cheating out resources. They’re also both a conditional 1 for 1, in terms of Card Advantage. It’s clear that you’d play this guy in a dedicated Dark Magician deck. With that being said, DM has so much support at this point that I’m not sure if Magikuriboh does enough to warrant taking up a Deck slot.

I think the one thing holding him back is his Fiend typing. Don’t get me wrong – it fits! But the fact that he, himself, isn’t also a Spellcaster, means that he kind of just supports the Dark Magician without receiving any support in return.

A good relationship has both give and take, so I feel bad for Magikuriboh, giving his all to serve his master, the Dark Magician.
