Hello Pojo Fans,

Magical Scientist gives older players PTSD.

The OG of FTK’s, the madman behind it all, Magical Scientist was one of the most powerful cards in the game until being banned. Summon him, get Catapult Turtle out any way possible (there were many) and your opponent was done for. There were no hand traps, there was no stopping it. 1000 LP for a Level 6 or lower Fusion Monster that couldn’t attack directly and went back to the Extra Deck in the End Phase, you never got there though. Fire off one generic Fusion monster after another, dealing 1100 or so damage, then fire off Scientist and Turtle if necessary and your opponent was dead. I was lucky, I rarely ever got Turtled by the Scientist. He’s banned for a reason: degenerate OTK/FTK potential.

Nowadays there’s cards to stop him and if he were ever brought back they may consider leaving him as is without an errata because of that logic. I think he needs one if he wants to ever come back. With Xyz and Link Summoning available there isn’t anything stopping you from building up a board by draining all your LP with Scientist. LP don’t matter as much anymore in the game and with 1000LP left minimum that may be enough to sit on while your monsters obliterate your opponent. Not even going to get into using cards to recover your LP once down that low or taking advantage of your low LP with cards. If made once per turn he’d be a single-card Link 2 at the least.

With tomorrow’s card coming up and us doing Instant Fusion about a year ago, let’s go way back for Throwback Thursday with Magical Scientist.

Magical Scientist is a Level 1 DARK Spellcaster with 300 ATK and DEF. Low Level 1 stats are standard, but a great Type/Attribute combo and you got the obvious One for One synergy. This is banned for an obvious reason, no once per turn effect to just pay 1000 LP and summon any Level 6 or lower Fusion from the Extra Deck. Said Fusion cannot attack directly and returns to the Extra Deck during the End Phase, but none of that should come up. Back in the day, this was easy to setup with Catapult Turtle for an FTK, but our Turtle friend now has a soft once per turn attached to him, so that’s impossible even if this was legal. Instead, you can just summon various Level 6 or lower Fusions to make multiple Extra Deck plays, just as long as you have the LP. You can easily make Rank 1-6s at the cost of 2000 LP and running 2 Fusions, or 1 if you want to overlay the Eyes Restricts with Scientist. You also got some Tuners this could summon to make Halqifibrax or any Level 3, 5, or 6 Synchro. Opening up the Extra Deck like this with no restriction outside a LP cost and a downside that’ll never come up is why this card is banned and won’t see the light of day minus an errata.

Advanced Rating: 5/5

Art: 4/5 Classic, yet simple artwork from back in the day.

Magical Scientist is definitely one of the oldest TT reviews I’ve done.  Done 5 times (although all of them were 06 or earlier, with the lone exception being the most recent in 17 for some reason) but this card sort of fits this week.  It’s just a Monster version of bringing out Fusions as opposed to a Magic card form as we looked at for the rest of the Extra Deck this week.  All of you may not have played the game long enough to have played this card yourself, but one way or another, you’re probably familiar with just how insanely powerful this card is.  Anyway…could this card come back to the game?  Probably not.  Things are too fast and too easy to abuse as a whole, and Magical Scientist has lost some of the power he had in other support cards over time (Catapult Turtle, for one) but there’s many better cards that can take too much advantage of Magical Scientist these days.  Stay Magical; my friends

Rating:  Banned, but very likely 5/5 if it were ever to come back somehow

Art:  5/5 His smirk is sinister, like he knew what he’d do and/or has done to the game.
