February 2011

Subject: Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund Commander deck by Jake.

This one is for all the Jund lovers out there.  The dragon players, the huge creature players, and the guy who entwines tooth and nail because it is insane.  This is the deck i've been taking to FNM lately and have had some success with, not a lot but it's fun to play when it does work.  It's gone through many changes and will probably go through more as i accumulate a better collection.

Some of my card choices explained:

Wurmcoil Engine - get used to seeing this in basically every commander deck you play, it really is that good of a card.  It's so efficient and begs to be answered, unless that answer is path/swords to plowshares it just replaces itself.

Wickerbough Elder/Indrik Stomphowler - good creatures, basically 4/4's that kill something when they hit play.  I wanted the deck creature heavy and having those creatures do something extra is what makes them make the cut.  I recommend these for any Commander deck running green.  Your Krosan Grip is good but isn't always enough in this format.  Expect to see Sol Rings and Tops running rampant on the other side of the table just waiting to hit the grave.

Shred Memory - I love, love, love this card.  It always does something for me when I draw into it.  You can either hate on a graveyard or transmute for: Cruel Edict, Terminate, Black Sun's Zenith, Hull Breach, Demonic Tutor, OR Fauna Shaman which can find any of your creatures that you're wanting.

Praetor's Counsel - Newest card to be added to the deck, ultimate recursion which is what you should expect for the insane amount of mana it costs.

Dragons! - Karrthus is a Lord of them afterall, and i have a nice suite of the best including Bogardan Hellkite, Hellkite Overlord, Broodmate Dragon, Malfegor(good answer to a lot of cards in commander), Bladewing The Risen and Steel Hellkite.  Don't be afraid to send Karrthus to the bin if killed, you can always get a Bladewing out and swing with both!

The rest of the cards are efficient black, green, and red cards that I have fun playing.  Most of them are self-explanatory and can be used in any commander deck in these colors.

The estimated cost of this deck is about 275 dollars.   A lot but I've been collecting over time and purchased From the Vault:Dragons which helped out immensely.  I hope you've enjoyed the deck and  have fun playing commander.
