Welcome to the World of (Mostly) White Weenies! By Isaac Tong Tournament Date: Friday August 9, 2002 Number of people: 26 Location: Comic Warehouse, Brampton, Ontario, Canada Format: Booster Draft (Odyssey, Torment, Judgment) Oh, boy...it’s gonna be another long night with this many people. You know what this means...five rounds instead of the usual four. During the initial drafting, I came across a lot of crap. Everybody in my draft group was pretty disgusted at the lame Odyssey packs we got. I ended up going almost mono white. But I was able to find a few decent other cards to splash in. Well, here’s the deck. Lands 9 Plains 3 Swamp 2 Forest 1 Nantuko Monastery 1 Krosan Verge Green Spell 1 Acorn Harvest Black Spells and Creatures 2 Cabal Trainee 1 Fledgling Imp 1 Zombify 1 Strength of Lunacy White Spells and Creatures 1 Beloved Chaplain 1 Lead Astray 1 Mystic Penitent 1 Teroh’s Faithful 1 Phantom Nomad 1 Battlewise Aven 1 Mystic Familiar 1 Nomad Mythmaker 1 Aven Flock 1 Possessed Nomad 1 Chastise 2 Cease Fire 1 Equal Treatment 1 Aven Cloudchaser 1 Dedicated Martyr 2 Pay No Heed 2 Cagemail This is the first time I’ve played with this much white. And this time, I actually passed up a Faceless Butcher! Insane, eh? Round 1- Isaac Tong VS John Corbett Game 1 was pretty slow for the both of us. Thankfully, I drew a Beloved Chaplain and started to peck away at his life points. Although he got some stuff out, I got out Battlewise Aven and together with the Beloved Chaplain, they beat him to a pulp. Game 2 was a bit different, seeing how I didn’t get my Beloved Chaplain out. Instead, the Possessed Nomad came out as well as a few other weenies and that was enough to do him in. Rounds 1-0-0 Games 2-0 Round 2 - Isaac Tong VS Matt Hammond Once again, the Beloved Chaplain came out and killed him. Although he used a Thermal Blast to kill it, I used Zombify and got him back for more fun. And that was enough to finish the game. Game 2, he sideboarded in some stuff. Although I held him off, his Chainflinger plus the Threshold ability plus me being at low life equals me losing game 2. And that was all we got. If I held him off a bit longer, I may have been able to squeeze through for the win. Oh well. Rounds 1-0-1 Games 3-1 Round 3 - Isaac Tong VS Jordan Holmes No Beloved Chaplain...actually, yes. But instead of him doing the attacking, the flyers were just fine. Since he couldn’t handle it, game 1 was mine. He placed some stuff in to stop them but it wasn’t enough and they came out again to help me win the second game. Rounds 2-0-1 Games 5-1 Round 4 - Isaac Tong VS Lindsey Hokanen Not good. I hoped I can get through this. Game 1, he used Mirror Wall and Wormfang Manta and beat me up. In game 2, I had the upper hand with weenies and the Possessed Nomad pecking away at his life. Game 3 was a bit tight. I used flyers to keep him on the defensive. Although he stalled, he couldn’t stop everything and eventually, I got the game. Rounds 3-0-1 Games 7-2 Round 5 - Isaac Tong VS Eugene Lo Whoever won this one would go on to the top four. I wasn’t sure how this guy played but he was supposed to be a tough guy. He proved just that when he got Treacherous Vampire and Call of the Herd. Good grief...he had to draft a majorly broken card. Basically, I had him in the early game but he used Lost In Thought to stall before getting his army out. And that happened to me twice. Everybody said that if it wasn’t for his lucky draws, we would be more even. Rounds 3-1-1 Games 7-4 That was it. No foil prize for me tonight. I was still pretty happy with how I did tonight. I better get down to props and slops. Props Beloved Chaplain and my flying trio for helping me get this far. And my dad for staying up so late just to pick me up. Slops Eugene for drafting a broken card and screwing me over twice with Lost In Thought. But I would have done the same thing if I was in his position. Well, that’s it for me. Any questions or anything, give me a shout. Now if you don’t mind, I have to go duel for three hours straight. Later! Isaac Tong ditong@ipoline.com
