You get to play spells you otherwise wouldn't. I've always liked the Lancer and I really like the new Lancer, Houndmaster. Play it and see what you think. The plan here is a turn two Molten Rain or Stone Rain. The rest of the deck plays really simple. First turn you can either Prospector/Bonesplitter/Clamp. Second turn you either Desperate Ritual and blow up a land, or cast and attack with a Lancer or Houndmaster, or play Flunkies. The Flunkies in his deck have little or no drawback. There's twelve creatures with haste for them to team up with. The deck is meant to be played a little too fast for decks to deal with after losing lands. The ideal situation would be to destroy a land by turn 2 followed by another on turn three. The Bonesplitter makes the otherwise weak damage of the Lancer and Houndmaster turn into quite a powerhouse. Bolt or Incinerate can clear the way. I suppose the Prospector could be replaced with Raging Goblin, which is quite good with Bonesplitter. The deck could be changed even further, but then it wouldn't be ponza. After sideboard the deck doesn't have so many problems with rush decks. It could be competitive I'm sure.
