My first deck

Hey all some friends of mine just taught me how to play magic and I thought: hey this game is kind of cool. So I looked the gatherer and tried to find some interesting cards and I looked in the store and one the net for bargains and ended whit these 30 dollars worth of cards (and I think my overall deal was ok J). What I would really like you to do is present the choices you make changing the deck. Why is this a good curve? How come this 5-drop is better than the other 5-drop? (I have a lot of 5-drops) I would like to know why I should have more or fewer kill cards, why, why, why I am a knew player eager to learn..

I would like the deck to be standard and as I’m a competitive guy I like it to be good.. about the budget I would really like you too keep to the cards mentioned in “cards in stock” , but of course a good cheap effective card is welcome. By the way I cannot get more tendrils so adding to 4 helps nothing… but suggestions to replacements if I succeed in getting them is welcome. A sideboard would be nice. On this time I don’t have much strategy except “kill opponents cards” and “play good cards” if you want to evolve the deck in some direction you are welcome.

By the way I really like soul collector so I would like to keep that J

The “Curve” is a very important concept in the game of Magic. The basic concept is that you want to put a constant stream of pressure on your opponent with cheap, efficient creatures in the early game and large, beefy creatures in the late game. If a deck has too many early drops, then it will run out of power once your opponent plays his or her big guys. Conversely, if a deck has too many late drops, then you will be dead before you ever get the chance to play your big cards.

For your second question, the power level of cards is all relative. If you cast your card and it has no impact on the game, then its power level is quite low. Cards Garruk Wildspeaker or Chameleon Colossus can kill your opponent one or two turns after they are cast in most circumstances. A card like Sengir Vampire will need at least four or five turns to kill your opponent in most circumstances.

And on that note, we have arrived at the actual deck fix. Your existing deck list wasn’t bad, but I fear that it is too slow to compete with faster aggro decks, such as elves. To counter, I’ve added two elements to your deck; more evasion and life gain. Inkfathom Infiltrator is straight up unblockable and Shriekmaw has fear. Dauthi Slayer, Hypnotic Specter, and Soul Collector all have some sort of evasion, but you already knew that. As for the life gain, I’ve maxed out the Tendrils and the Corrupt (Both have been printed as commons and shouldn’t be hard to find. I know that you mentioned that you can’t get anymore, but there isn’t any substitute for that card, unless you want to pick up Damnation). Life gain isn’t often an effective strategy, but when it comes in addition to destroying your opponent’s best creature, it can be enough to swing any game back into your favor.

As for your sideboard, pick cards that address your biggest weaknesses. If you are losing to elves and kithkin, put four Deathmarks in your sideboard. If a control or combo deck is keeping you down, put in a lot of discard spells and Extirpate. The sideboard should be based on what you expect to see when you show up at your local card shop or wherever else you play with your friends.
