v0rac10u5’s Deck Garage
Ponza

April 14, 2008

Hey,

let me introduce. I'm just a belgian guy who likes to play magic with some friends. Although i don't play tournaments i have sometimes really tough decks to beat.
But we'll talk about that later.

Normally I don't ask help for making decks, cause i try to figure out myself what is good or bad about a deck. This can only be done if you play a lot with the deck and see where there are gaps in your defense.

But some time ago, i think 2 years, a saw a nice deck type called 'Ponza'. This type was different from just regular red burn, but also from just plain red LD.

So I started to build a deck around certain cards, which one I will tell you in a minute.
After the building, I started playing and what happens, this deck couldn't win one game. I lacked burn, destroy, LD, lands, etc. Just everything.

I thought about quitting the deck but I figured why not try something harder this time? So I kept the deck and I'm still improving it.
This is were I want to ask for your help.

Let me tell you how the deck was:

4 Arc-Slogger
2 Kumano, Master Yamabushi
4 Slith Firewalker
4 Mogg Fanatic

3 Magma Jet
4 Stone Rain
4 Molten Rain
4 Pillage
4 Seal of Fire
4 Seething Song

4 Ghitu Encampment
2 Blinkmoth Nexus
16 Mountain
1 Strip Mine

I think this was the deck a couple of months ago.
As you can see i play just casual with friends, no really specific format.
But this deck wasn't so bad but i just couldn't win consistently.
I lost against a goblin deck, blue flying deck, white control deck, enchantress deck, discard deck, dredge deck, even against a mill deck.

So I went on the internet to find similar decks to see how other people managed their decks.
A first big thing was that slith was always played together with Chrome mox. But unfortunately i cannot afford this card, cause 4 off them wou
ld cost me around 40 euro! A second one was that a couldn't get rid neither of hordes of pesky little elves, goblins, etc. neither big creatures. This was really a big problem, cause it made my land destruction spells just obsolete. I thought about raze, but that would also destroy my own lands and i really need them in the first couple of turns.

Anyway, eventually i made this changes:
-4 Slith firewalker: not good enough without mox
-2 Kumano, master Yamabushi: slogger is better, and usually not enough mana at my disposal
-1 Magma Jet: I only used his scry ability, actually i don't know if he will stay in the deck
-1 Ghitu Encampment: 'comes into play tapped' is too hard to have 4 of them
+4 Wildfire: this solve i think my problems of too much lands and creatures on the other side
+3 Nevinyrral's Disk: back to old school, it will also get rid of nasty enchantments
+1 Apocalypse: not too sure about this cards, perhaps just for fun

So in abstract i would like your help to fight against evil (:p) and that my deck will win more often.

The cards i want to stay in the deck are: seething song, seal of fire, arc-slogger, strip mine and pillage. For the rest you may change whatever you want.
If you have any more questions please let me know.
Thanks anyway for listening to my sad little story.

greetings

Land destruction has always been hit or miss. If your opponent can cast their spells off of one land or randomly draws a few in a row, your whole strategy goes out the window. Try to add cards that establish card advantage. Flametongue Kavu nixes your opponent’s best creature and you still have a 4/2. Avalanche Riders nukes a land and you still have a 2/2. I think Fire Diamond might be better for you than Seething Song. It gets you to four mana on turn three, which gets you the Kavu and the Riders, and will still get you the slogger a turn early. If this setup still doesn’t win for you, try moving the deck in Red/Green, where Terravore and other green fatties might help your cause.
