v0rac10u5’s Deck Garage
thallid/saproling deck
January 10, 2008

Hello,

Seeing your other articles I have come to think that its time to put one of my better decks under somebody elses microscope. This deck is pretty much a casual deck that has seen some local cardshop tournament play. I have no budget as far as this deck goes, I've spent enough money on it already, and I would like to keep it the way it is color wise even though it has some great mana production abilities. So here is what I believe is a pretty mean thallid/saproling deck. So what do you think of this saproling deck?

Creatures:

4 Thallids
3 Essence Wardens
3 Utopia Mycons
3 Sporesower Thallids
2 Thelon of Havenwoods
3 Deathspore Thallids
3 Nullmage Shepards
Other Spells:

4 Doublings Seasons
4 Saproling Symbioses
3 Verdant Embraces
3 Fists fo Ironwoods
2 Muraganda Petroglyphs

Lands:

23 Forests

Thanks
Jason

Overall, I would have to congratulate you on making a good saproling deck. Unfortunately for me, you haven’t left very much for me to fix. I can only suggest a few minor tweaks.

• Play four of your lower casting cost cards. This will help prevent you from being overrun before you make all of your saprolings.
• Cut Deathspore Thallid. As the deck stands now, you can only play it by sacrificing tokens to Utopia Mycon. The card is only strong if you control a ton of saprolings, and, if that is the case, you might as well attack with them and just win the game as opposed to killing your opponent’s creatures.

• Move Nullmage Sheperd to the sideboard. If you expect at least half of your opponents to be playing artifact-heavy decks, then leave it in the maindeck. Otherwise, this belongs in the sideboard.
• Replace Muraganda Petroglyphs with Overrun. It will boost your nontoken creatures and the trample really comes in handy.
• Replace four forests with four Treetop Villages. Also, replace four forests with swamps so you can use Thelon’s ability without sacrificing saprolings.
A budget fix if I’ve ever seen one. All of the cards I’ve suggested are common or uncommon, so you shouldn’t have much trouble finding them for cheap. If you ever decide to put some more money into this deck, cards like Nemata, Grove Guardian, Verdeloth the Ancient, and Thelonite Hermit would work well. If you ever decide to put a lot of money into this deck, Coat of Arms and Garruk Wildspeaker would work very well.
