Mind Twist

Back when I started playing Magic, the only thing my group knew about Mind Twist was the name, and based on that we all wanted one. I don't think any of us ever got one, but I do have it now and have had a chance to play with it against it in Old School formats, singleton formats, and Old School singleton formats. It's just as scary as the name implies, especially when you can do it on the first turn. As we remember from our experience with Mind Shatter, it's a little less devastating when you have to get the mana "fairly", although no less demoralizing. You do have to be a little careful when using it, because its native environment is full of things that turn it around, along the lines of Fork and Deflection.

Mind Twist (5/25)

One of the classic cards that has been permanently enshrined on the Legacy banned list, Mind Twist is a powerful little discard spell that ruins lives. Random discard is occasionally hit and miss, but being able to scale Mind Twist up to rip all of the cards out of your opponent’s hand late game while still threatening them early means Mind Twist rarely ever is a bad draw.

Mind Twist is a bit weird: it’s maybe too powerful to get unbanned in Legacy, but the overall flattening of power level means that it may actually get passed over for Thoughtseize and its ilk. It does do a good job of ruining your opponent’s day all the same, though.
