Ornithopter

The first time I ever saw an Ornithopter was in about 1995 or so. I instantly wanted to trade for it, despite the fact I had absolutely no idea at the time what I would do with one. I just wanted to have the experience of casting a spell for zero mana. Nowadays, I don't always see this card around so much, even in casual play. There are probably some cynical jokes out there about "you get what you pay for", but I think you actually get more than that with Ornithopter. Turning into Ink-Eyes is worth a lot more than you paid for it. Carrying Cranial Plating and being an artifact to increase the power boost itself is worth something. And even in the card pool of 1995, that little zero frees up all your Dark Rituals and Sol Rings to fuel Howl from Beyond or the like. Silly, perhaps, but I think I'm going to go try that at the next Old School game!

Ornithopter is a simple card in almost every way, a 0/2 flier for free. It's still cute, and it's still a critical piece in a lot of degenerate decks like Affinity.

On its own, Ornithopter isn't great. It can't do damage, and it just sits around and thops before getting blown to smithereens.  Where it's great is in conjunction with cheap ways to pump it, like Cranial Plating and pump spells; being zero mana means you can drop additional things on that turn and still get it in, which makes decks run better. It synergizes well with mechanics like Improvise and the aforementioned Affinity, too.

Ornithopter is never the bride, but it makes a pretty serviceable bridesmaid. Don't rely on it, but there are plenty of decks where it can pull its weight and thop the crap out of your opponents.
