Hungry Lynx

You may remember that I've posted in this space before about how I have a Rat tribal deck. This is pretty much the last card I ever wanted to see from that point of view. I suppose the good news if you're the opponent is that if the Lynx's controller's cats have protection from your rats (even if it's not my deck and it only applies to the token), there won't be much combat going on between them and they'll have to look at other ways to trigger the overkill +1/+1 counter ability. The bad news is that even in monogreen, there are things that let them do so basically at will (cf. Prey Upon). And that's not even taking into account your combat with other players in multiplayer settings.

James H. One of the more flavorful Commander 2017 designs, Hungry Lynx manages to be on both sides of good and flavorful. You get to give an opponent a Rat each turn…but as we all know, cats do love their rats, and Hungry Lynx helps make sure that every trade against a rat is a winning trade. It's a good politicking card: you give someone help, but it's harder for them to take advantage of your generous gift. And when rats die, all of your kitties get bigger, the thrill of the hunt kicking in.

Besides making sure Cat tribal annihilates Rat tribal in Commander, Hungry Lynx may see fringe play in Legacy. I think Cat tribal is very questionable, but it is a way to grow your army, and the Lynx itself is a respectable 2/2 for 1G, which has seen play since the beginning of time.
