Labyrinth Champion

I find it kind of funny in a way that the references to Theseus' story are spread out across about eight Theros cards. It's probably a good thing, as it's probably not really possible or reasonable to cram any one myth onto just one card, but it is noticeable. While Labyrinth Champion is arguably not the most powerful example of the heroic ability word, there are lots of creatures in Theros and nearby sets that it can kill outright. Extra value from a card you were playing anyway is always a good thing, especially when you add it to types of cards that traditionally have an element of risk associated with them like Auras and Giant Growth effects.

Today's card of the day is Labyrinth Champion which is a four mana Red
2/2 with the Heroic ability of dealing two damage to target creature or player whenever you cast a spell that targets it. This is a solid effect and easily supported with combat tricks or auras, but the four in the mana cost is a big drawback in any Constructed format and isn't helped by the low power and toughness. The potential for reusable burn will have this see some play, particularly in Heroic themes, but outside of that or a specific combo it isn't likely to be popular.

In Limited this can be a very dangerous card which makes it an easy first pick in Booster with the wide range of spells available to target it for repeated use of the burn effect. The single Red in the casting cost allows ease of use in multicolor builds and there is little reason not to include it whenever Red is present in your Sealed deck.

Labyrinth Champion is a human warrior that has conquered the Labyrinth. You are probably wondering how a 2/2, WITHOUT first strike or any evasion skills could conquer anything. Well, he used his HEROIC ability. Cast a spell that targets Labyrinth Champion and L.C. does 2 damage to target creature or player. At first glance this sounds amazing, but then you look at the mana cost. 4 mana for a 2/2 that does nothing on its own. Labyrinth Champion is a card that is begging to be broken. Until that time, it is a below average creature.
