Corrupt, the other Drain Life.  It's the other "X" spell that's really isn't an X spell.  You can hit for huge damage late or removal early.  It's a great for what it does.  Black decks can use this with Soul Feast as good kill mechanisms.

In limited, if you're playing 40% or more black, I'd run it.  Removal at almost any cost is good.

Just one more of Black Control's removal spells, this card inflicts direct damage to a creature or player. It seems high-costed, and it's a sorcery, but by the time Black has this kind of mana on the board, it's done quite a few other low-costed nasty things to you in the meantime, like Duress, Innocent Blood, Chainer's Edict, Smother...

Corrupt can take out a pesky creature, or it can deliver a final blow to an opponent, or restore your life to a manageable point when necessary. In limited, you really need to be going fairly heavy black to make this efficient. In constructed, it's a nice addition to Black Control.

Constructed - 4

Limited - 2.5

At first there was Drain Life. It cost 2 mana to start, but gave you 1 life for each black mana thereafter. Then came Soul Burn, which cost one more to do the same thing.

Now, we have this pseudo X-spell. I know, it doesn't have X in its mana cost, but the X is the number of Swamps you control. And it costs 6, whether it does 1 damage or 20 damage. That can be good or bad, depending on how little the creature is and how much mana you have.

One bonus this does have over Drain Life and Soul Burn is that the life gain is not limited by the creature's toughness.

In limited, it's removal. If you're playing swamps, you'll typically want to play this.

This card is thrilling me more and more. In the right deck, black can
be a huge force. And it's one to be reckoned with.
Combined with tons of great black cards, like Cabal Coffers, Haunting
Echoes, Soul Feast, Innocent Blood, Duress, Mirari, and more, you can build
a mono-black deck that simply relies on spells to win. Corrupt is deadly
after a lot of swamps are in play. Then Mirari that. You can win the game in
one or two turns of constant direct damage.

Corrupt replaced drain life in ye olde mono black decks,  and has the
benefit of being six mana even for a huge corrupt,  but the drawback of not
being capable of moving those small early threats,  and not being plussed by
rituals.  It's uses in constructed only go as far as very specific deck
types though.  If you are playing heavy amounts of swamps in limited, this
card is -amazing-,  it can move fatties or give you a good 10+ point life
swing,  which will win a lot of games,  those that were stalled out or
roshambo contests.

constructed: 2.5
limited: 4
