This is going to sound like bragging, but I liked dragons before they got played in tournaments. Even though I’d like them anyway, I think it’s great that fewer of them are “noob bait” and more are the cards you play when you want to punish control decks for tapping all their mana or present a threat that demands an answer. Inferno of the Star Mounts is, even without any context, one of the best of those. Firebreathing also works great with all the new red treasure cards, and if all that still wasn’t enough, that 20 damage effect is very achievable in Commander and is one of a few damage effects that actually threatens people’s life totals in that format.

An uncounterable swooping friend with firebreathing and haste is already a promising start, and Inferno of the Star Mounts is a pretty potent finisher just on those parameters alone. The “20 damage to anything” rider is more pretty than practical, though there are definitely places where this can pop off and nuke something; while it’d normally take 14 mana to get there, all Inferno cares about is actually getting to 20 power after paying for its ability. It’s not merely cute, even if that eye-popping ability is what first draws notice; an evasive finisher that calls for immediate removal is pretty nice, and it continues to show that swooping is, has been, and always will be bad.
