Icejade Creation Kingfisher – #BACH-EN008

You can target 1 WATER monster you control; equip this card from your hand or field to it. An “Icejade” monster equipped with this card can attack while in Defense Position. If it does, apply its DEF for damage calculation. While this card is equipped to a monster: You can target 1 monster your opponent controls with ATK less than or equal to the equipped monster’s DEF; Special Summon this card, and if you do, return that targeted monster to the hand. You can only use this effect of “Icejade Creation Kingfisher” once per turn.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Icejade Creation Kingfisher is one of your big Icejades.

2500/2500 stats and at Level 9, Kingfisher has your highest ATK and second highest DEF in the archetype. Kingfisher has some Inzektor in it as it can attach to another Icejade and balance out the low ATK most inherit. Piercing and applying DEF during damage calculation for the monster it’s attached to immediately changes who these monsters can run over. The catch is that this effect only applies when the attached Icejade attacks a defense monster…in any battle would’ve been better.

Kingfisher can Special Summon itself, but like its first effect there’s a catch that makes it less stellar: DEF of the Icejade Kingfisher is equipped to has to be greater than the ATK of the opponent’s monster you are targeting. The payoff is great: Special Summon Kingfisher, bounce the opponent’s monster back, and you still have your Icejade that Kingfisher was attached to. While there are some monsters that Icejade won’t have a problem pushing this effect through, 2000DEF isn’t always going to win the day, that’s where Icejade Cenote Enion Cradle comes in. Activate Cradle to lower everyone’s ATK by your Icejade (including itself) and then you’ll have an easy time (theoretically) Special Summoning Kingfisher. Icejade Tinola also can be an easier way to Special Summon Kingfisher.

Icejade Kingfisher can help smash through defense monsters while equipped, but its Special Summon ability is needs your Field Spell to have a higher probability of success. With the Field Spell a central part to the archetype’s success, you should get it, then equip Kingfisher and get your Kingfisher for free onto the field to do some real good damage and even take out a boss monster each turn you activate Enion Cradle.

Now we look at an interesting card that lets your Icejades do something that’s pretty rarely seen still: Icejade Creation Kingfisher.

Kingfisher is a Level 9 WATER Aqua with 2500 ATK and DEF. Fine stats overall, plus a good combo again with Aqua/WATER. Your first effect lets you target a WATER monster you control and equip this card from your hand or field to it, which of course you can expect benefits from this. First off being equipped to an Icejade monster lets the monster attack in Defense Position and apply its DEF. You don’t see attacking in Defense Position too often really, mainly just Superheavy Samurais, Invoked Cocytus, Total Defense Shogun, and E-HERO Rampart Blaster and that’s really it. With you preferring your Icejades in DEF as they don’t really have a good ATK stat most of the time and some even have good DEF stats, giving them the ability to use that DEF stat on the offense would be nice. Second effect works while equipped to a monster, letting you target a monster the opponent controls with ATK less than or equal to the DEF of the equipped monster, letting you Special Summon this equip card and bounce the opponent’s monster to the hand. It’s fine removal, but would of liked a Quick Effect honestly. You can at least use this the same turn you equip, and the equip effect isn’t a hard once per turn, so that’s pretty good at least. You got a nice 3000 DEF boss monster in the archetype you run as well, so you should be able to bounce nearly anythting. Hard once per turn on the bounce, which is fine. Kingfisher helps your boss monster be much better than it is on its own, so you kinda want to have this alongside your boss.

Speaking of options you could Special Summon via yesterday’s card, here’s Icejade Creation Kingfisher.  Water/Aqua still, 2500 atk/def, and Level 9 (remember, there are some killer Level/Rank 9 Extra Deck plays you can make) Target a Monster on your Field and Equip this card to it (also making it returning to your Hand via yesterday not so bad) and it can be done from your Hand or Field, which is a plus.  An Icejade equipped with this can attack while in Defense Position, which is all the more awesome if you attached it, say, to another one of these.  A second, Once per Turn Effect, lets you Target an opponent’s Monster while this is Equipped to one of yours, and Special Summon another copy…that makes playing 3 of these look really good, doesn’t it…oh, and the Monster you choose has to have Attack less than or equal to the Defense of the Equipped card (so if Equipped to itself, that’s 2500) which is enough to clear most things off the Field, and as it does return said card to the Hand, I see that as ideal. This guy is every bit as much a combo piece as yesterday…a bit harder to use I think, even if higher Level Monsters being combo pieces is more regular.  I still say run 3 and abuse it with/on itself.

Icejade Creation Kingfisher is the next card on the lineup, being a level 9 WATER aqua monster; level 9 main deck effect monsters are rare in general, so seeing one in Icejade of all things is pretty weird (we could make True King of All Calamities if it weren’t banned!). Despite being level 9, it boasts an unimpressive spread of 2500 attack and defense, which isn’t horrible but I wish it was a little higher for a level 9 monster.

Only Kingfisher’s last effect is a hard once per turn, though it’s unlikely you’ll be able to abuse Kingfisher’s non-once per turn effects. You can target a WATER monster you control and equip Kingfisher to it from your hand or field, which helps its high-level issue a lot (though you still run the risk of bricking if you run too many Kingfishers). Icejade monsters equipped with Kingfisher gain the rare ability to attack in defense mode and use their defense for damage calculation. Most of the Icejades boast poor defense, but Icejade Aegirine has a decent stat of 2000, and their new boss has a great 3000 defense, so they’ll likely be the main monsters to make use of this effect. The aforementioned last HOPT effect can be activated as long as Kingfisher is equipped to any WATER monster, not just an Icejade; you can special summon it, then target and bounce an opponent’s monster with lower attack than that WATER monster’s defense. Bouncing is always handy, especially when Kingfisher can always re-equip itself after doing so, but unfortunately you’ll likely only get mileage out of this effect from the new boss, as there aren’t many troublesome monsters worth bouncing with less than 2000 attack. This effect would’ve been just fine as a quick effect, but it’s still great for boardbreaking as long as you can consistently field high-defense WATER monsters. For pure Icejade, it’ll be the only way you’ll be attacking anything at all, but in other WATER decks, it can function as a sort of bootleg Dracoback, the Rideable Dragon (which is still a compliment!). If nothing else, it’s an easily summonable level 9 body as well if you need that.

Art: 3/5 It looks a little weird, even though I do get that it’s supposed to be a fish-shaped battleship.

Is it just me or is Konami trying really hard to bring back older mechanics and make them relevant again? Just look at how strong the Fusion mechanic is right now. Not only that, but check out how Equipping mechanics are making a resurgance. Recently we got the Infernobles which were strong for a while. Inzektors have sort of come back. In the new set, Dimension Force, we’ll be getting the Therion archetype which also revolves around having Equip cards.

This brings us to today’s card: Icejade Creation Kingfisher. This monster can equip itself to any WATER monster. OK, so it’s not exactly a brick in Hand (despite being a Tribute monster). But what does it do while equipped?

By bouncing an opponent’s monster with an ATK less than the equipped monster’s DEF, you can Special Summon the Kingfisher. Pretty simple – not broken. This does target but it doesn’t destroy. WATER monsters tend to be more defensive in nature, with the Icejades themselves, lending well to this aspect.
There’s one other effect here, but it doesn’t really come up that often even in its own archetype. While equipped to an Icejade, they can function like the Superheavy Samurais. By that, I mean that they can attack stuff while in DEF mode, applying their DEF stat for Damage Calc. The only monster who can benfit greatly from this ability is the boss of the Icejades (which we’ll cover in a few days).

I like the Kingfisher, but it just doesn’t really do that much. The Icejades seem to be a control deck through and through, so having another card in their arsenal of removal options is nice. I wish the Kingfisher had granted some sort of protection while equipped. Since the Icejades already have built-in destruction protection in the form of their Graveyard effects, maybe the Kingfisher could have given them Targeting protection or protection from being removed outside of being destroyed (like banish or bounce).
The way it is now, it’s purely a going-2nd card. Once your opponent has a board established, you can start to break it apart by summoning an Icejade, equipping it with the Kingfisher, bounce something, then get the Kingfisher itself onto the Field as another body.

Advanced Rating – 3.5/5 (It’s potent in any WATER control deck, but even in its own theme, I’d run no more than 2 copies)
Art – 5/5 (Spoilers – EVERY Icejade card is going to get a 5/5 in Art from me)

Icejade Creation Kingfisher – Pojo COTD Review – Therion “Captain” Tav

Hello there, I hope you are all having a great week! As spring is heating up and summer approaches fast, we at Pojo are taking a chill dive into more Icejade cards from Battle of Chaos, with Icejade Creation Kingfisher being today’s Card of the Day.

As expected from the archetype, Kingfisher is an Aqua-type / Water-attribute effect monster with an unusual 9 star levels and no special summon requirements, which is convenient for cheating it out. Its statline reads as a clean 2500 attack and defense, which is alright, I guess. Since nobody is actually tribute summoning these days, unless you can cheat the normal summon count or somehow get around the tribute requirement, we can safely assume that this will only hit the field in some unfair way, which is how the game is properly played if you want to stay competitive.

Conveniently, Icejade Creation Kingfisher’s first effect is simple to use and here to solve the high level issue: Target one of your Water monsters and equip Kingfisher from your hand or field to it. If you equip an Icejade monster, it can attack while staying in defense position and uses its defense stat for damage calculation, a mechanic that is not too crazy, but I like it a lot since it incidentally protects against every kind of Mirror Force-like effect your opponents might pull out of their sleeve. Ironically, the most prominent of these right now is Lightning Storm, a Normal Spell card. You can use this effect as often as you want, but considering monsters equipping other monsters are vulnerable to backrow removal, what with them being treated as equip spells and all, it’s more of a convenient way of diversifying your field in case you are afraid of getting hit too hard by something like Super Polymerization for Guardian Chimera and is in itself not powerful, but can come in handy.

Kingfisher’s second effect states that if it is equipped to a monster, you can target one of your opponent’s monsters with less attack than the equipped monsters’ defense, then special summon Icejade Creation Kingfisher and return the targeted monster to the hand. This is a hard once per turn, but still a great countermeasure against extra deck monsters without quick effects that negate monster effect activations, of which there unfortunately are quite many out there. Still, considering that in conjunction with the first effect, you can easily cheat out this monster and get a bounce out of it and the fact that this works in pretty much any water-centric deck, it is a nifty effect to have available. Just remember that you have to have high defense monsters for this to work and some monsters you would love to bounce with this effect might even have too much defense. Unfortunately, since Link monsters have no defense stat, this effect will not work against them at all! If this was a quick effect, it would offer some serious and skill-intensive disruption to your opponents’ board-building plays (being able to use it once on your turn, then equip and be ready to bounce on the enemy turn again), but alas, spell speed 1 means it can only be used during your main phases. Still, at the end of the day you are left with a free level 9 / 2500 attack monster that can do other cool things, so I guess it’s not too shabby.

Looking ahead at the upcoming Dimension Force booster set, I cannot overlook that Therion “Leaper” Fam is coming out there, another high-defense Aqua/Water monster with built-in disruption effects that can easily special summon itself, then equip an aqua-type from the graveyard, which is a really neat and easy way to equip the Kingfisher again and get even more use out of it! We should probably watch out for that interaction in the future should the Icejade theme become more popular.

Rating: 3.5/5

props:

great role player with no special summoning restrictions, works well in any Water-attribute-centric deck, easy to summon, offers some nice free disruption, interesting synergies being an optional equip spell monster that can switch around the monster and spell zones

slops:

stats are nothing special, the bounce is conditional and doesn’t work against Link monsters and isn’t a quick effect and a hard once per turn. It’s crazy to me that I have to take off points because of these things, but the standards have become VERY high of what we expect even from roleplayer monsters these days!

A kingfisher is a bird, and this is a very abstract version of that, with legs resembling some sort of seashell and crystalline wings. Even though I don’t exactly adore this artwork, I have to say that I love and respect the creativity that was put into its concepting, since the typing on this is “Aqua” and not “Fish” or “Winged Beast”. The background looks gorgeous as well, and as this is a Super Rare, the holo effect certainly looks amazing with all the shiny hues of turquoise in the art box.
