If Hurkyl’s game text seems familiar to you, it might be reminding you of Narset, Parter of Veils from War of the Spark. They have the same mana cost and the same repeated card-drawing effect, but Hurkyl requires you to jump through more hoops, if you like. It’s perhaps fairer and perhaps weaker, but there’s a couple of things in Hurkyl’s favor. One is obviously that she can be a commander, but another is that she doesn’t have dwindling loyalty and can keep working as long as you keep her in play. Part of the fun of using her is probably going to be figuring out a chain of spells that will keep going indefinitely, or at least long enough to put you in a position to end the game.

On the story side of things, Hurkyl doesn’t have as big a role as people closer to the brothers, but it was still an important one. When she cast her Recall during Mishra’s attack on Terisia City, the incident brought true magic back into public, if you like, and back into people’s minds.

Nearly three decades after her first reference, Hurkyl has a proper card of her own, and it’s an interesting little body that can “draw” you a lot of cards. She triggers off of any non-creature on your turn, and she can draw you a card for each type…which makes for fun if you cast artifacts and enchantments to potentially get artifact or enchantment creatures, but there is that. Realistically, it turns your first spell in a turn into a cantrip, but she can get you much more than that, and her body’s also acceptable enough. I don’t think she’ll be a star, but Hurkyl is a fittingly solid card that can push you through a potential late-game trough.
