Say hello to another HyperSonic Speedster in Heroclix.

Like most of the cheaper and recent ones, JQ's Speed and Attack Values are not stellar, starting at 10+HSS and 9 respectively. Defense is bolstered by Energy Shield/Deflection, at least -- until click #3, when he loses all powers and his stats tumble to pogtastic depths.

You see, Johnny Quick is a speedster who gets his powers from an addictive drug. So here he crashing into withdrawal. Kudos to the designer for being creative instead of doing the usual activation click route (which would have actually been more accurate than usual). Anyhow, after a fresh injection, the stats and powers rebound with Charge, Blades and Super Senses before getting HSS again and ending with Flurry.

But all this is basic boot HSS stuff, despite the more random placement of powers. What makes Johnny Quick excellent is his Probability Control-wielding team ability. With it, even on his bad click he's useful (he can even put the CSA token on himself to push beyond the click).

FEATS?

The usual for grounded speedsters apply: SWINGLINE, ARMOR PIERCING, and NANOBOTS all are especially efficient on HSS figs. But beware: his fluctuating damage may deny him Nanoboting at a crucial moment and may render Armor Piercing wasted points.

THEMES/COMIC ACCURACY:

See that bit on the junkie click above. He's a member of the Crime Syndicate of Amerika on a parallel Earth with Owlman, Ultraman and Superwoman.

IN SUM:

For a few points more, you get a mix of Jeanne-Marie Beaubier's HSS damage-dealing with E Quicksilver's stats plus permanent Probability Control. Not bad.

RATING:

3.5 out of 5. Almost right up there with the better cheap speedsters in the game.

Today's review is Johnny Quick from Origin

Another DC set, another member of the CSA.  That’s right folks, next year when we get Power Ring and Guy Gardner we can finish off our CSA and JLI teams.

He is a Unique, 77 points, 0 range, 8 clicks of life, and CSA team

Speed:  HSS, Charge, and Flurry…whats not to like…oh wait…click 3

Attack:  Not bad overall…cept for that weird click

Defense:  ESD and HSS always a good combo, super senses keeps him around longer

Damage:  All over the place and kind of hard to plan for, but at times you don’t even need Armor Piercing

The Good:  Good Movement

      Good attack values overall

Defense can keep him running and stayin alive

You don’t even need Armor Piercing

With a Lian Harper, you get Probability Control

      Long dial

The Bad:   What is up with click three

Attack and Damage values are hard to plan for

Feats:   Swingline, ICWO, Protected, and Nanobots work best

Overall:    He seems like a fun click to play with, but just hard to plan for.  He has the old HSS which automatically makes him a 2/5 character, but he has the attack and damage that is different to make him better.  If it wasn’t for that bad click and unpredictability, he would be awesome.  The team ability helps him out a lot though.  He is not good for tournaments, but a great addition to any CSA team.

Constructed/Unrestricted:  3 / 5

Sealed/Draft:  2.5 / 5

Overall:  3 / 5

Today's Click of the Day is  Johnny Quick
Unique from Origin

Johnny Quick is a member of the Crime Syndicate of America. The CSA is the supervillain form of the Justice League and Johnny is met to resemble the Flash. Let's see if he can live up to it.

He is 77 points; Grounded; CSA Team; 0 Range; 1 Bolt
 10    10   14     10    10    9    18    7     KO    KO    KO    KO
19    19    17    19     10    10    9    8     KO    KO    KO    KO
 16    16    15    16    17    16   15   14    KO    KO    KO    KO
13      2     1      2     3      2     3    2     KO    KO    KO    KO

Speed  -- Never better. I see lots of smooth 10s, even way down the dial. Hypersonic Speed FIVE clicks deep is amazing for the points. Too bad that third click is the last 4 on a fast guy since 2002.

Attack  -- After all the color and double digits on his speed the attack doesn't look that defining. Why is it these days so many figures start with 9 to only get to then 10 five clicks later? I guess you can take advantage of that.

Defense  -- ..At least Johnny will be able to fend off ranged attacks. Energy Shield isn't bad but the later Super Senses with 17 would keep him alive longer. Maybe now you'll have something to look forward to when he gets hurt.

Damage  -- 3! But then 2. Then 1 *sigh*. Oh, but there's 2 again. And three! ..Uhh, back to 2. Wait THREE again! Now 2. KO... anyone else see a pattern?

Sclupt  -- That dreaded karate kick is whipped so fast it slashes like a blade, hence the mid-dial Blades/Claws (or so I think).

 Romanco's Breakdown
~ Long dial for the points and many defense powers to keep him alive
~ Has a three damage Flurry click
~ Johnny loses his "quick" a couple shots in
~ Crime Syndicate of America (as in Probability Control)

I really like Johnny Quick. When I tried thinking of strategies to beat him my mind kept drawing blanks. Yes it's easy to pick him off those first few clicks but Mr. Quick sparks a comeback and doesn't seem to die until the KO slots. As soon as he gets Flurry, he can do SIX damage. And don't forget his team ability means all-life Probability Control. Slap on In Contact and you've got a deceitful attacker. Worth it.

I give Johnny Quick a 4/5.
