Shade used to be a Flash Villain, a Jay Garrick Flash Villain to be exact…but then James Robinson brought him over to his new Starman comic, and treated him somewhat differently.  See in Starman Shade was actually a hero, as he felt that his home of Opal City needed protection and he refused to commit crimes there.  Pretty cool concept actually.  Shade was so popular in that series, that he got his own Four issue series, delving into the deep, dark background of the immortal one.  Shade’s a doozy, that’s for sure, and while I don’t think his rookie and exp. version capture the character well, I think the veteran is freakin’ awesome!

Stealth and TK on any dial is always a plus even though neither power is on the same click (when you lose stealth on the veteran you get TK.)  Everyone knows I love Stealthed Ranged Attackers, add in some Outwit and the Mystics ability, and I’m practically drooling.  Sure 73 points is fairly expensive, but I feel that with the right tactics and support, Shade can be the lynchpin of a strong tournament team.

Ebay prices on Shade are, like most of Unleashed, a little hit and miss right now.  Recent sales have ranged from $3.25 to $10.99.  Because his Vet is a rare, that range seems reasonable to me.  I FREAKIN’ LOVE the sculpt…it captures the character to a T.  Now if we just had the Mikael Starman clix, well, I could re-create some of my favorite Starman stories.

My Ratings: (Playability, then Collectability)

Exp:   3, 3

Vet:    4, 4

Next week – yes, even MORE of madness Unleashed!  Only next week, we’re going to do some REAL heavy hitters…Want a hint?  All three are flyers, two are women, and the guy, well, let’s just say that Willpower means a lot to this man.

Steelwasp Veteran Shade

Pts: 73
TA: Mystics
Range/Attacks: 6/1
Stats:
8 7 7 8 8 8 8 KO(Stealth for first 3, Phasing for last 4)
9 8 8 8 7 7 7 KO(Smoke Cloud for first 3, Telekinesis for next 4)
16 15 14 14 13 13 12 KO(Willpower for first 3, Regen, for last 3)
2 2 1 1 1 1 1 KO(Outwit on 3rd-5th clicks)

Now here we have an interesting figure. Shade is one of those characters that can used in multiple ways(and all of those ways are great). Shade can snipe/Outwit others from in Stealth, throw a friend into battle(Telekinesis), or make some hindering terrain to help friends and slow down enemies. Once Shade gets hurt, either phase back to a medic or use Regeneration and heal yourself on the spot. One other great feature is its seldom seen Mystics team ability. This ability deals one click of damage to any figure that attacks Shade and this damage is similar to Psychic Blast(Impervious, Invulnerability, and Toughness don't reduce it). Shade is a very sneaky character that shouldn't get hit easily but if she does, can heal right away. This has to be one of my favorite non-uniques in the set so:

Ratings:
200: 3/5
300: 3/5
400+: 3.5/5
Sealed: 4.25/5(amazing here because of Stealth and Willpower)
Sculpt: 4/5(just look at that grin)
