Izumi Curtis, Instructor:

Instructor is, by far, the most combat oriented of the Izumi allies.
In fact, I think very highly of Instructor, and would actually tie it in power level with One With All in a few decks.

The first use for Instructor is, obviously, in Marcoh-7, where One With All can't be dropped with a boost in command. Additionally, Instructor has a pump that also hits quick Alchemy, giving characters like Hohenheim Elric, Decaying Body a huge boost of quick. Hohenheim, Protective Father also really like Instructor, since it helps him with the battles that can be his weakness if he doesn't draw into stones and nine-costs.

Instructor's biggest issue with constructed playability comes from One With All's incredible power level. But Instructor is still really strong.

In Limited, Instructor has an incredibly hihg power level, as it boosts alchemy, which can let characters that typically have 0 alchemy win battles that they really have no business actually winning.
Additionally, since SDS has a ton of common and uncommon alchemy locations, it's even more useful in the format it would typically appear in.

Ratings:
Constructed: 4/5
Limited 4.75/5 (play it.)

Today we're looking at Izumi Instructor. So what to do, you're not running an 8 command leader so One With All is out. 9 cost allies are pretty much out so Seething Temper is out. You're not running Ed, Novice so Sacrificial Act is out. What's an Elric deck to do? The answer is Instructor. Not much to say about it, it's a first turn drop with 4 alchemy and 4 wits. It has a Quick Alchemy of 1 to get out of sticky situations and she can pump up your other allies as well. It even has some uses in other alchemy based decks since any non-villian leader can drop her at level 1 with 6 command. In sealed she's even better as once again 1st turn drops are crucial in the format.

Constructed: 4/5-Great alternative to One with All
Sealed: 5/5-1st turn drop for any leader int his format.

Izumi Curtis, Instructor 5 Cost Elric

Human-Hero

2/4/4

Quick Alchemy: 1

Battle Alchemy: Target other ally gets +1 Alchemy and Quick Alchemy: 1.

We continue on Izumi week with one of my favorite Izumi allies. Instructor proves quite cost efficient in that shes a solid drop ally for level 1 and she contains an ability boost.

I believe the flavor of her subtitle is captured. She shows others how to learn alchemy and gives them a glimpse of Quick! Quick is one of my favorite concepts in the game, its made or broke a few battles for me. Quick 1, isn't a whole lot however in Elric quite a few characters hold the Quick stat, so it becomes a +1 rather than a base of 1. Most characters I have with Quick is a base of 2, which means atleast Quick Alchemy 3, often more via At the Gate. The plus one boost to alchemy is nothing to sneeze at either, its possible to use it as more then an Alchemy boost, add the +1 Alchemy and use Mustang's Gloves, or have it to make for less Equivalent Exchange.

Overall a very solid ally, decently stat'd for her cost, has a solid ability.

Constructed- 4/5 Nicely made card, decent stats for a level 1 recruit and a built in boost.

Sealed 3/5- The elusive 3rd stat on a small ally. Out of faction recruitment is possible with her 5 cost and no loyal to hold her back. A free stat boost, one thing that can easily make a sealed deck good, on an ally is simply amazing.

Tuesday 17 - Izumi Curtis, Instructor

Here's more of Izumi with Izumi Curtis, Instructor.

5 Cost - Elric Ally
Human * Hero

2/4/4
Quick Alchemy: 1
Battle Alchemy: Target other ally gets +1 Alchemy and Quick Alchemy: 1

As a common, this card might be cause some serious problems to certain decks. To say that, with no cost, you can give another character +1 Alchemy and Quick Alchemy for this battle step can have it's advantages. The only downfall, is that the ability is a battle ability meaning it fades away at the end of the battle step as with all other Battle ability bonuses and penalties. But then again, whose to say that you can just team attack one big battle of alchemy against an unstoppable field and swing for the fence as it were. The ability would've been great if it were an ability that can have multi-triggers or activated in the Search phase instead. Hurts the score of the card but lets look at the scores.

Constructed: 3.75/5. Again would've been great if it were a search ability. The only con is that if you're not team attack, if makes no point in giving an ally a bonus since it will just go away.

Limited: 2/5. Kind of makes it hard to use it's ability on ally's that you get one or two off and try rushing a level 2 leader.

Grab some chalk and chap them hands...

The “Steel Talon Alchemist”

Izumi Curtis: Instructor

5 Cost Ally

Strength 2 Wits 4 alchemy 4

Quick alchemy 1

Battle Alchemy: Target other ally gets +1 alchemy and Quick Alchemy 1.

This card does have a very nice battle ability. When SDS came out I would have said this card is an easy choice for your cheap Izumi Ally. But now with Sacrificial Act out I can only say this is an average card. If you are going to run a pump deck and not a deck that gets to high levels quickly then this card is still decent. In the constructed environment I still give the points to Sacrificial Act. In a Limited format using SDS in as either sealed or draft then I would point to this card and say put it into an Elric deck, it’s even cheap enough to throw in with leaders from other factions.

Final Score

Constructed: 3.5/5 solid card just not as good as Sacrificial Act.

Limited: 4/5 above average card and a common to boot.
