Firesong and Sunspeaker has a surprisingly checkered history for a fun-looking card: it was originally available only as a Buy-a-Box bonus for Dominaria, meaning that getting one for a Commander deck could be surprisingly difficult. It’s never been particularly broken or meta-defining in either Commander or Standard, so that problem was more for anyone trying to make a fun deck with the dynamic duo; considering their abilities are quite interesting, it might have affected somewhat more people than we realized at the time. I suspect that they’re more effective when they’re adding a bonus to red damage spells (mass creature damage gets particularly crazy), as some players will shy away from white spells that gain life and don’t do much else without the minotaurs. On the other hand, someone might prove me wrong and sleeve up a Commander deck that burns everyone to death with Revitalize and Survival Cache!

Making their proper set debut after a stint as the first of the mechanically-unique box-topper promos, Firesong and Sunspeaker have a clear shell they want to fit into: a Boros spellslinger deck, aiming to burninate all of the things and turn all of white’s incidental lifegain into a salvo of burn. One thing to note is that Firesong and Sunspeaker do exclude hitting planeswalkers with their second ability, so keep that in mind when picking out your targets.

All the same, they have obvious things they work well with: turning things like Lightning Bolt into Lightning Helix is a nice bit of trickery in a long game, and red and white spells benefit suitably off of being both colors. They’re more fun than functional in Constructed, as costing six mana and not protecting themselves well besides is a downer; that said, they do have six toughness, out of reach for most of red’s mass removal spells, and lifelink is subtly unpleasant for opponents when everything has the ability.

Constructed: 2 (they’re too expensive for the deck that would benefit most from their talents)
Casual: 4
Limited: 3 (not phenomenal, but a 4/6 is a solid enough body)
Multiplayer: 3.5 (pair this with something like Hour of Devastation for maximum joy)
Commander [EDH]: 3.75 (the deck that makes the most use of their talents will adore it, but the caveat is that they’re pricey and a bit clunky at times)
