Hello Pojo Fans,

Exchange of the Spirit is our Throwback Thursday choice this week, fittingly.

This card before it was errata’d was an OTK nightmare in Traditional Format. You could get 15 card in your grave so quickly it wasn’t even funny, and I’m saying that even by today’s standards. Thankfully the change made it so BOTH players need to have 15 cards, makes things a lot fairer. Pay 1000LP and each player makes their 15 or more card graveyard their new deck, then shuffle their new deck. With the new retrains revolving around this card, and its ability to get searched by the retrained Keldo, EofS isn’t so hard to get to the hand, especially while being unlimited currently. Its lethal capabilities has been curved, which needed to happen, however, it has become more useful to be in the grave rather than being used. The retrains of Ishizu need this in the grave to have their secondary effect(s) kick, so running multiple copies isn’t out of the question, though most players don’t even run one.

The whole draw to the card was the pre-errata where you would leave your opponent with next to nothing or nothing and win. Now, in decks that would play it, it would slow your moves, which isn’t what the decks want to do. I thought maybe it could be used against the deck but it would be too situational with how that deck goes through cards. It would force them to slow their moves once activated, however you would have to have more cards in your new deck to be at an advantage against them.

Throwback Thursday this week could really only be one card, Exchange of the Spirit.

Exchange of the Spirit is a Normal Trap that can be activated by paying 1000 LP when both players have 15 or more cards in their graveyards, letting you swap each player’s graveyard with their own Deck and then shuffle the Deck. The swap between the cards in your graveyard and your Deck sounds cool, if only this was the pre-errata version that only needed you to have 15 cards in grave cause then you could just send the entire opponent’s Deck to the graveyard and leave them with nothing left in Deck, but that was too powerful, hence the errata the card got. Now it’s kind of questionable since your graveyard might not be as good as the cards left in Deck, and the same goes for the opponent, making that a risk. It also got a once per Duel clause on it after the errata, which I don’t know if it was needed, as a hard once per turn alone might of been fair. This is another example of a card being a shell of its former self with an errata, to a point where it’s near unplayable, except now to just throw it into the graveyard to make your Ishizu retrains better.

Art: 5/5 I still like the simple, old school style artwork.

What else were we going to do today?  We’ve done this twice (once around New Years at the end of 06, and then once in 15) so I’ve reviewed this pre and post-Errata.  See, this thing never really got to work (the thing being the OTK/FTK with this) as we didn’t have the majority of the cards even released in our side when this card was first released.  And the obscurity and rarity played into that as well of this card.  We still don’t actually have all the cards, and even the new playability boost it gets off these new Ishizu retrains isn’t GREAT.  The errata helped make this card less deadly, but less fun, too.  It’s a card that never really got to do its thing, and I wish it could’ve gotten to.

We can’t discuss the Ishizu cards without bringing back their intended namesake, Exchange of the Spirit, a Normal Trap that can be accessed by various Ishizu cards. Currently, its effect allows you to pay 1000 LP while both players have 15 or more cards in their Graveyards, switching their decks with their Graveyards and shuffling their decks, and you can only activate one per duel. EotS has had a rather bizarre history; in the OCG, it was part of a nasty FTK with Makyura the Destructor. Before its erratum, EotS only required you to have 15 cards in your Graveyard, not your opponent, so as long as you could mill 15 cards (usually Makyura being among them so you can activate EotS immediately), you can mill your opponent’s entire deck on turn one, causing them to lose instantly via deck out. EotS would eventually be limited while Makyura was banned, until they were released later with errata. In the TCG, Makyura FTK thankfully never happened since the deck was preemptively hit before it came stateside, though both cards would eventually be freed with errata as well. Nowadays, EotS is only used in some Ishizu decks to trigger bonus effects, and many meta decks cut it anyway as it’s essentially a garnet if you open it, not to mention you have to mill it too. Either way, this card’s FTK shenanigans are over, now that both players have to have 15 cards milled. I’d give this card a lower score, but since Agido loves this card, it gets to avoid the dreaded 1 out of 5.

Art: 2.5/5 Another bizarre artwork from early Yugioh, so is the soldier turning into a skeleton or are they switching souls or something?
